Co-op has reached Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. Unfrozen released update 0.81.02 on 30 September and it brings Alliances, the team mode players had been asking for since the game entered early access on 30 April. It is a regular patch, so everyone who owns the game gets it at no extra cost. Steam has also cut its own price this week, but a key from another store still costs a lot less.

What Alliances changes in update 0.81.02

Alliances lets you share a map with a partner, against the AI or against other players. The studio confirms 2v2 for multiplayer. Allies always move at the same time, so nobody sits waiting for the other to end a turn. You share fog of war, see the route your ally is planning and swap armies and artifacts. You can also send or request resources, which the series had never allowed. If one of you meets the victory condition, the whole alliance wins.

No friend around? Quick Start has five Alliance templates that pair you with an AI ally against AI opponents.

The patch goes beyond co-op:

  • A new random map generator mode that builds the map from scratch. You pick size, number of players, richness, difficulty, symmetry and win conditions. For now it is aimed at games against the AI and only available in Quick Start.
  • Reworked matchmaking, with losses weighing more at high ranks, and a leaderboard reset.
  • A bigger emoji wheel that also works in battles and in towns.

Steam is 25% off and a key is cheaper still

Steam sells it today for €29.99 (no fees), Steam Key, down 25% from €39.99. In our records Steam had been at €39.99 since 17 September.

The cheapest key among the forty or so offers we track is at Driffle: €16.28 with coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€17.27 with fees), Steam Key. That is €12.72 less than Steam, or 42%, with Valve's discount already counted.

The €6 offer is a Steam account

Sort by price and Difmark comes first at €5.87 with coupon Gocdkeys (€6.13 with fees), Steam Account. You get the login for an account that already has the game. Nothing is added to your own library. For a game you now want to play with friends that is a poor deal, because you would be signing in to an account that is not yours and that does not have your friends list. We recommend the key.

Has the key been cheaper before?

Barely. The figures that follow are store prices without fees or coupons, so compare them with Driffle's €18.09 before the coupon and not with the €17.27. Since June that key has moved between roughly €17 and €19.50, with a single day at €15.73 on 3 September. The update has not pushed it up. The lowest figure in our history, €6.99, has been there since June and belongs to the account.

Steam rates the game Very Positive: about 87% of some 23,000 reviews. If co-op was what you were waiting for, today's key sits in its normal range, and every store is on the page to buy Heroes of Might and Magic Olden Era key. Would you rather wait for a dip like the one in September? Set a price alert.

Prices checked on the morning of 2 October.
