Songs of Glimmerwick came out on 30 September, on PC only, and the cheapest way in this morning is a global Steam Key at Driffle: €16.01 with coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€16.99 with fees). Steam is selling it for €22.94 (no fees) with a 10% launch discount that runs until 14 October. On top of the base game there is a Supporter Pack, the soundtrack and a bundle with Eastshade, and not all of them make sense for everyone.
A magic school where spells are tunes
The game is by Eastshade Studios, the team behind Eastshade, who also publish it themselves. You are a student at a university of magic hidden in a forest, and you cast spells by playing melodies on a flute. Between lessons you look after the university's botanical garden, make friends and explore an island with a few mysteries of its own. There is fishing, you can put a band together, and there are moth races. There is no conventional combat.
It is fully voiced and the requirements are modest: 6 GB of RAM and 5 GB of disk space at minimum. According to its Steam page it is available in English, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish (Spain).
The base game: Driffle undercuts Steam by 26%
With fees included, the Driffle key at €16.99 works out 26% cheaper than the €22.94 (no fees) Steam is asking. Once the launch sale ends on 14 October, Steam goes back to €25.49 (no fees).
You will also see a Steam account at Difmark for more than twice the price. Skip it: it costs more, and an account is somebody else's profile, not a game in your own library.
Supporter Pack and soundtrack: Steam only
Both extras are sold on Steam. The Supporter Pack costs €5.19 (no fees). It is a DLC for people who want to back the studio, and its store page does not make clear what is inside, so do not buy it expecting extra content. The original soundtrack is €9.22 (no fees), 10% off its usual €10.25.
Neither is tied to where you bought the game. Steam DLC only needs the game in your library, and a key activated on Steam puts it there, so you can buy the key cheaply and add either extra later if you feel like it.
The Eastshade bundle against two separate purchases
Steam sells Songs of Glimmerwick together with Eastshade for €26.16 (no fees), a 42% discount. Bought one by one on Steam, the two would cost €29.06, so the bundle does save money if you shop only there.
Outside Steam the sums change. This morning Eastshade costs €6.12 (no fees) on Steam itself, the cheapest offer for it in our comparison. Add that to the €16.99 (with fees) of the Driffle key and you pay €23.11 for both games, €3.05 less than the bundle. If you already own Eastshade, the bundle is of no use to you.
What we would buy, depending on what you want
If you just want to play, take the key: it is the cheapest route by some distance. If you liked Eastshade and want to support the people who made it, add the Supporter Pack on Steam; that is what it exists for. If you have not played Eastshade yet, the Glimmerwick key plus Eastshade bought on Steam comes to less than the bundle. The soundtrack is a separate purchase whichever way you go.
Will the price drop?
Too early to say. We have only five days of history (all figures without fees or coupons): the key launched at €16.79 on 30 September and we have not seen it any lower since. That is not enough to read a trend. If you would rather wait, set a price alert and we will tell you when it falls.
Steam user reviews today, as shown on its store page, are Very Positive: 90% of 185. There is no critic score we can quote yet. Every store is compared on the page to buy Songs of Glimmerwick key.
