Ubisoft has put a date on it: September 10. From that day For Honor stops working on Linux-based systems, and SteamOS counts, so the Steam Deck is on the list along with Linux desktops and the Steam Machine. The reason given is anti-cheat. The game leans on Easy Anti-Cheat, and Ubisoft says it cannot deploy protection in any meaningful way on Linux, so it is closing the platform to keep the environment safer.
It is worth being precise about what gets cut, because that is the part that decides whether you should spend money. What closes is online access through the anti-cheat layer. For Honor is multiplayer from top to bottom, so for someone playing on a Deck the practical outcome is the same as unplugging the thing: no matches, nothing to do with it.
Which machines are on the list
Anything with Linux underneath. A Steam Deck running SteamOS, a desktop on any distribution, and the Steam Machine. Windows PCs are untouched. The PS4 and Xbox One versions are separate products with their own online plumbing and are not part of this at all.
The timing is the odd bit. The game launched in February, Ubisoft Montreal still develops it, Ubisoft still publishes it, and seasons of content keep landing. Nothing is being shut down. One family of machines simply stops being invited in.
Buying it for a Steam Deck is money thrown away
Our page for the PC version currently holds 28 live offers across 12 stores. The cheapest is €3.01 at Kinguin, a standard key for Europe. Three euros for a game with this much content in it looks like an easy yes, and that is exactly where people get caught. A cheap game you cannot launch is not cheap. It is three euros you will not see again.
If the Deck is the only machine you own, hold off for now.
On Windows and on console the price is the good news
Nothing about the September 10 block touches a Windows machine or a console, and the prices on our page are as low as they have been in a long while.

The spread on that same page is wide enough to be worth a warning: €3.01 at the bottom and €170.79 at the top, for the same game. Our own record goes back nine years, to May, with 2,478 daily readings stored. The lowest figure we have ever logged is €0.91 and the average across the whole period is €8.29, so today sits comfortably under the long-run average without being anywhere near the floor.
Off PC, the console editions are separate pages: For Honor on Xbox One starts at €1.99 and For Honor on PS4 starts at €3.59. Steam reviews land on Mixed, with 25,034 of them counted on our page, and the critic score we keep is 76.
The Starter Edition costs five times the full game
This is the part that deserves a minute of your attention. The Starter Edition is the cut-down release, the one that hands you fewer unlocked heroes, and today it is priced at €15.53. The Deluxe Edition is €8.29. The complete base game is €3.01. So the trimmed version costs more than five times the full one, and nearly double the Deluxe.
It happens with old catalogue entries that nobody reprices while the main edition keeps sliding downwards. The rest of what we carry: Gold Edition at €15.49, Marching Fire at €15.78, Year 8 at €3.03. Unless you specifically want the season content, the base game is the sane purchase and the Starter Edition is the one to walk past.
What you are actually buying from each store
Most of the 28 offers are standard keys, the sort you redeem and forget about. Driffle sells one tied to Ubisoft Connect (Uplay) at €3.03, global. Eneba lists one at €3.64 restricted to the United States region, and that word matters: a regional code only activates from the region it was issued for, so a US listing bought from Spain or Germany can refuse to redeem. If you want to buy For Honor key cheaply, read the region line before you pay, not after.
As for Linux, Ubisoft has said it will keep looking at ways to improve its anti-cheat and has not ruled out opening the platform back up later on. No date is attached to that, and no promise either, but it is a real part of the announcement and not a consolation prize. For now, September 10 is the line: Windows and console carry on as normal, Deck and Linux do not.
