Xbox used its Gamescom slot to line up twenty games that will land on Game Pass the day they come out, and Dune Awakening was on the slide. Read the small print before you cancel a purchase: what joins the service on 22 September is Filmic Archive, the expansion. The base game is not part of it.

An expansion has to expand something. If Filmic Archive is what caught your eye, you still need Funcom's survival MMO sitting in your library first, and it has to be on the account you actually play on. That last bit is where this product page gets slippery. There are 79 live offers across 19 stores, and the three cheapest ones do not sell what most people assume they sell.

What the subscription really covers on 22 September

Filmic Archive releases on 22 September and is in Game Pass from day one. That is the whole announcement. Subscribers get the add-on; nobody gets a free copy of the game.

So for anyone waiting on the expansion, the job hasn't changed: get the base game, and get it in a shape that stays yours. On this page that takes a bit of care.

Three formats sold side by side

The same game shows up three different ways in the comparison, all of them sorted together by price. A Standard offer is a code you redeem yourself, and the game attaches to your Steam account for good. A Steam Gift is a transfer: another account sends you the copy and you accept it. A Steam Account is not a copy at all, it is the login for somebody else's profile that already has the game on it.

Sorting by price puts the accounts on top. Plenty of people never scroll past the first offer.

This is one of the busiest pages in our catalogue, and that cuts both ways: heavy competition on price, and plenty of chances to walk off with the wrong product.

Why you should skip the three cheapest offers

Right now the cheap end reads €12.34 at HRKGame, €12.99 at Kinguin and €14.94 at G2A. Shared accounts, all three. A fourth one at Difmark asks €52.99 for the same arrangement, which tells you how little the price means in this format.

Logging into someone else's profile means the game never shows up in your library. Your hours, your friends list and your achievements sit somewhere else, and while the owner is connected you can't get in at all. Dune Awakening is a persistent MMO, so your character, your base and everything you build hang off that borrowed account. The day the access stops working, the progress goes with it. The gap between that €12.34 account and a key you redeem yourself is €10.21.

Price alone won't warn you, either. That Difmark account costs more than every key on the page, and the cheapest account costs less than every key. The format is the part you have to read.

The cheapest copy that lands in your own library

Filter down to Standard and the lowest asking price is €22.55 at Gameseal. Behind it the offers pile up within a euro of each other: Eneba at €22.60 and €22.79, K4G at €23.04, Driffle at €23.12 and €23.43, HRKGame at €23.16, YUPLAY at €23.53, Gamivo at €23.79, Kinguin at €23.99.

Those are the figures the stores ask for. A few of them take a coupon off at checkout, so the live offers below can show a number lower than the one you just read. Right now the cheapest key you can redeem yourself is 18.72 (with coupon SEAL17CDK) at Gameseal.

Asking price against asking price: that €22.55 sits €10.21 above the €12.34 account, and €27.44 below the €49.99 Steam charges for the standard edition.

Steam Gift is the format to walk past here. The cheapest gift is €34.90 at G2A, which is €12.35 above the cheapest key for the identical base game, and the same category climbs to €253.65 on that store. A Dune Awakening Steam key costs less and lands straight in your account.

Deluxe, Ultimate and the official stores

Worth a detour before you commit to the standard edition. Deluxe starts at €35.67 at YUPLAY, with Eneba at €36.97 and K4G at €37.12. The cheapest of those undercuts the €49.99 Steam wants for the plain version, which is an odd thing to be able to say about a bigger edition. Ultimate opens at €45.66 at Gaming Dragons and Eneba lists it at €50.79.

If you'd rather hand your money to a storefront you already know, Fanatical has it at €27.74, Instant Gaming at €36.99, Cdkeys Com at €37.79 and GamesPlanet at €43.09. GamersGate and Greenmangaming both stick to €49.99, same as Steam. Fanatical is the cheapest of the official storefronts, about five euros above the best Standard offer on the page.

Is it worth buying now?

Funcom's game has been out a little over a year and its Steam verdict is Mostly Positive: 47,305 positive reviews out of 66,627. That's a big audience with a sizeable unhappy minority inside it, so read a handful of the recent ones before you decide.

If the expansion is what's pulling you in, have the base game ready before 22 September, and make sure it's a copy you can redeem with your own hands. Ten euros and change is what separates a borrowed profile from a game that's still yours next month.
