Square Enix has put out a free demo of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, and it arrives well ahead of the game itself, which is set for 3 December. This is the Monsters side of Dragon Quest, the one about recruiting and breeding creatures rather than levelling a party of heroes, and it follows The Dark Prince. Square Enix both develops and publishes it.
Pre-orders have been open for a couple of months. On PC the cheapest copy that is actually a key is a Steam Key Standard from CDKeys.com at €48.39 (no fees), and that figure deserves a second look, because it is also the lowest we have ever recorded for this game.
What Square Enix has not explained about the demo
It is free and it is out. Past that, we would be filling in blanks. Square Enix has not said which platforms the demo covers, how long it runs, or whether the progress you make in it carries into the full game. Anyone who played The Dark Prince will want an answer to that last one, and there isn't one yet, so treat the download as a trial run until the studio says otherwise.
Pre-order prices on PC
We checked on the morning of 16 September, at 07:42 UTC, and these move from one day to the next. Everything here is a pre-order, so the key is delivered on release day rather than when you pay. There are seven live offers for the PC version.
Steam charges €59.99 (no fees) and Green Man Gaming asks exactly the same, €59.99 (no fees). CDKeys.com undercuts both with its Steam Key Standard at €48.39 (no fees): €11.60 less than Steam, a 19% difference. Difmark goes lower, €40.31 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€42.12 with fees), but what you get there is a Steam Account, a shared login rather than a copy of your own. More on that further down.
62 days at exactly the same price
Our history for this pre-order runs 62 days, back to the day it opened. On not one of them has the key sat below €48.39, a figure we quote without fees and without coupons. Today's price is also the floor, and we first logged it on 22 August.
The honest read is that nothing has moved. If you were holding out for a pre-order cut before December, the record gives you nothing to lean on. Rather than checking every week, you can set a price alert on the PC page and let it do the watching.
The Deluxe edition, and what we cannot tell you about it
Instant Gaming lists the Deluxe at €73.99 (no fees) and CDKeys.com at €74.29 (no fees). What the extra content actually is, we don't know: none of the stores we compare spells it out, and we are not going to invent a bonus pack for them. The gap against the cheapest standard key is €25.60, which is a lot of money for a description nobody has written down.
Nobody has reviewed it, players or critics
There is no verdict on this game from anyone. It has not launched, so its Steam page still reads "No user reviews", and we have no critic average to quote either. That is precisely why the demo matters here. For anyone weighing up a pre-order at €48.39 (no fees), it is currently the only first-hand look available.
PS5, Xbox and Switch 2
PS5 has three offers. The PlayStation Store wants €59.99 (no fees) and no third-party PSN Key has turned up, which leaves a physical copy from Amazon UK at €52.31 (no fees) or a shared account from Difmark at €40.31 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€42.12 with fees).
Xbox is the thin one. The only thing we have is that same Difmark shared account, at €41.99 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€43.88 with fees). No Xbox Key from anyone, no Microsoft Store price in our data. Worth knowing before you plan around that version.
Nintendo Switch 2 has two offers: the Difmark shared account at €29.39 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€30.71 with fees), and a physical copy at Amazon UK for €46.50 (no fees). That boxed Switch 2 copy is the cheapest real copy of the game on any platform.
A word on the shared accounts, since they post the lowest number on every single platform. You are buying access to somebody else's account, the game is not yours, and that access can be pulled. With a game that has not even come out, you would also be paying today for a login you cannot test until December. On PC the saving against the CDKeys.com key is €6.27 once Difmark's fees are counted, which is not much of a reason to take the risk.
What I would do is play the demo first, since it costs nothing, and decide afterwards. If it wins you over, buy Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World key on PC at €48.39 (no fees) and you are paying the lowest this pre-order has ever been. If you want something on a shelf instead, the Switch 2 box at €46.50 (no fees) is the one to watch.
