Amazon has dropped DOOM Eternal into the Prime Gaming giveaways, free for anyone already paying for Prime. One detail changes everything about what you do next: the copy Amazon hands over is the Microsoft Store one, tied to your Microsoft account. It is not going anywhere near your Steam library.
Write down the two dates. You have until 21 October to claim it, and until 20 November to redeem the code you get. After that it is a permanent licence. Cancel Prime in December and the game stays on your account.
Ten minutes well spent, then, because id Software's shooter is still one of the best-reviewed games on Steam: Very Positive, from 187,483 reviews. The awkward part is not the quality. It is which shelf the free copy sits on.
All the prices below come from our catalogue on 17 September, and resellers move them from one morning to the next. Every figure appears twice: what the shop advertises, and what actually leaves your card once its payment fee is added.
What Prime gives you, and where it lands
A Microsoft Store copy lives on your Microsoft account. That is fine if that is where you play, and it is fine as a free game in any case, but it will not show up next to the rest of your Steam collection, your friends will not see you playing it, and no Steam achievement will tick over.
For a game most people bought on Steam six years ago, that matters more than it sounds. Your saves, your mods and your habits are wherever your library is.
The same Prime batch also carries RiMS Racing, handed out as an Epic copy, and Wall World 2 through the Amazon Games app. DOOM Eternal is the one people will queue for.
One offer in 61 matches the format Amazon is giving away
We currently track 61 live offers across 15 shops on the PC page. Sorted by format, the count is lopsided:

One. A single Eneba offer belongs to the same family as the Prime copy. Amazon is giving away the version of DOOM Eternal that the resale market barely bothers to stock, while almost everything on sale points at Steam.
That is the useful way to read the giveaway. If you have Prime, claim it, because free is free. If what you actually want is the Steam version, the giveaway does not help you and the price still applies.
The Steam version: €6.49 at Cdkeys Com
The cheapest Steam copy on the page is Cdkeys Com at €6.49, no fees, a Steam Key. You redeem the code yourself, the game drops into your library and it belongs to you from that moment.

Valve has been asking €29.99 all month
Steam's own price has not moved: €29.99, no fees, every single day we have checked this month. So the reseller code is roughly €23.50 cheaper than the official shelf, for the same Steam Key in the same library.
Is €6.49 a good number in absolute terms? Our own readings say it is comfortably below normal. We have been logging this game for more than seven years: 3,867 readings spread over 1,726 separate days, averaging €14.97. Those history figures are always before payment fees and before coupons, so compare them with the advertised price, not with the till total.
The 55-cent Eneba offer needs a warning before a recommendation
That lone Windows Store Key is listed at €0.55 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€1.14 with fees). It is the lowest number on the page by a distance, and we are not going to call it the cheapest way to own DOOM Eternal.
Two reasons. The shop's own wording says Standard Edition, so on paper it is the whole game, and at that figure it is the sort of number that can evaporate at checkout: check it before you pay. And it is a Microsoft Store format, so it would put the game in the same place Prime is about to put it for nothing. Worth a look out of curiosity. Not worth a purchase without reading the shop's own wording first.
Two offers on the page are somebody else's account
Two of the 61 are Steam Account: you get login details for a profile that belongs to the seller. The game sits in their library, never reaches yours, and the day they change the password there is nobody to appeal to. Skip those, whatever the number next to them says. A Steam Key costs a couple of euros more and it is actually yours.
