Steam's Souls-like tag gets stuck on more than you'd expect: next to Dark Souls you find platformers, roguelites and the odd shooter. We took the games that carry it and also have a Switch page on Gocdkeys with offers in stock this morning, left out the badly reviewed ones and the pages with just a couple of scattered offers, and kept fourteen where dying costs you something and bosses have to be learned before they can be beaten.
The review scores come from Steam, so they describe the PC version of each game. Nintendo doesn't publish player ratings for the eShop that we could use instead. Each table shows the cheapest account with fees, because it's the only format all fourteen have in stock today; the next section explains why we'd still pay a little more for a code when there is one.
Accounts, eShop codes and cartridges: what you get on Switch
On a Switch page, read the format before the price. These fourteen pages mix three kinds of offer:
- Account: Key4Games, Difmark, Kinguin, G2A and a few others sell access to a Nintendo Account that already owns the game. You play it on your console, but the purchase isn't in your account, and if the seller ever takes that account back, the game goes with it. It's the cheapest offer on almost every page here, and on most of them the only digital one.
- eShop Code: a code you redeem in the Nintendo eShop on your own account, so the game is yours. The region has to match: a European code goes on an account registered in Europe, a US code on an American one. This morning only Remnant: From the Ashes and Darksiders III had European codes in stock; Hollow Knight, Silksong and Dead Cells were selling US codes. If you've never redeemed one, we explain it in how to redeem a Nintendo eShop code.
- Physical copy: Amazon, Fnac and Media Markt list the cartridge for several of these, among them Hollow Knight, Remnant, Ender Magnolia and Sifu in its Vengeance Edition. It costs more than any digital offer, but you can lend it or sell it on.
The Nintendo eShop itself doesn't show a price on these pages, so we can't tell you what it charges today.
Dark Souls Remastered and two games from Gunfire
Dark Souls: Remastered is where the name comes from. QLOC ported FromSoftware's original and included the Artorias of the Abyss expansion. You arrive in Lordran as an Undead, rest at bonfires that bring every enemy back to life, and when you die, your souls stay on the ground where you fell: reach them without dying again or they're gone. Summoning help and being invaded both work online, which on Switch needs a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Very Positive on Steam, 92% of 101,595 reviews, the best score of these three.
Remnant: From the Ashes hands you a rifle instead of a shield. Gunfire Games set it on an Earth overrun by the Root, a plant-like plague, and kept the skeleton intact: World Stones that work like bonfires and respawn enemies when you rest, Dragon Hearts in place of Estus, and a dodge roll that matters as much as your aim. Maps and some bosses change between playthroughs, and it was built for up to three players. Very Positive, 84%.
It's also the clearest case for a code. Key4Games sells the account for €9.38 with coupon GOCDKEYS15 (€10.06 with fees), and G2A has a European eShop Code for €13.36 with coupon GCKG2AT6V1P (€13.65 with fees). Under four euros more and the game sits on your own account, so that's the one we'd take. These are the five cheapest offers this morning if you want to buy Remnant From the Ashes key:
And this is what customers of those stores say on Trustpilot:
- Instant Gaming — 4.7 / 5 over 833,000+ reviews.
- Kinguin — 4.6 / 5 over 120,000+ reviews.
- Eneba — 4.4 / 5 over 312,000+ reviews.
- Difmark — 4.1 / 5 over 14,000+ reviews.
- G2A — 4.0 / 5 over 346,000+ reviews.
Darksiders III came out of the same studio the year before. You play Fury, one of the four Horsemen, hunting down the Seven Deadly Sins with a whip, and compared with the first two Darksiders it leans clearly towards Souls: fewer enemies that hit much harder, and the souls you're carrying are dropped where you die. It has the weakest score in this guide, Mostly Positive at 75%. The European code isn't at a good price either: Instant Gaming asks €14.89 (no fees), and in our price history it has been cheaper on 235 of 312 days. The Key4Games account costs €8.52 with GOCDKEYS15 (€9.16 with fees). If you want the code, set a price alert for Darksiders III and we'll email you when it drops.

A crab, a fox and a kung fu student: three 3D souls-likes
In Another Crab's Treasure you're Kril, a hermit crab whose shell has been repossessed. The seabed is full of human rubbish, and whatever you wear on your back is your armour: a tin can, a bottle cap, each with its own way of blocking and its own special move, and each one breaks after enough hits. Aggro Crab plays the jokes against a very straight Souls structure of checkpoints, bosses and currency you can lose. There's an assist mode for anyone who wants to lower the difficulty. Very Positive, 93%.
TUNIC looks like a small Zelda starring a fox, and fights like a Souls: a stamina bar, a dodge roll and bosses that take you apart in a few hits. It hides its rules in the pages of a manual written in an invented script, so you learn as much by reading as by fighting. Very Positive, 91%.
Sifu, by Sloclap, has no stamina bar and no levels, just kung fu and five people to track down for killing your father. When they beat you, a talisman brings you back older: the death counter adds years, every decade you hit harder but have less health, and beyond seventy the run is over. Very Positive, 92%.

Side-on souls-likes: Blasphemous, Death's Gambit and the Ender games
Blasphemous, from Seville's The Game Kitchen, is the 2D game that copies Dark Souls most openly. When the Penitent One dies he leaves a Guilt Fragment behind, and until you go back for it your Fervour, the bar that powers prayers, stays smaller. Blasphemous 2 keeps that and lets you choose one of three weapons at the start, each opening a different route through the map. Very Positive for both, 90% and 91%.
Death's Gambit: Afterlife is the one with the most RPG in it. Sorun signs a pact with Death to reach Siradon, a land where nobody dies, and plays with a stamina bar, a class chosen at the start and gear with stat requirements. White Rabbit's Afterlife edition added areas and bosses to the original. Very Positive, 81% on a smaller sample of 4,277.
In ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights Lily, a priestess, wakes up in a kingdom where a rain has turned everyone into monsters. She doesn't fight herself: the spirits of the bosses she purifies fight for her, starting with the Umbral Knight. We don't have its Steam reviews in our data, so there's no score for it in the table. ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist returns to the same world much later with Lilac, who can calm the homunculi and take them into battle. It's the best rated of this group: Overwhelmingly Positive, 95% of 17,307.

Hollow Knight, Silksong and Dead Cells as souls-likes
These three already appear in our guide to the best metroidvanias on Switch, so here's only what earns them the Souls-like tag. In Hollow Knight, dying leaves your Geo with a Shade in the spot where you fell, and you have to beat it to get the money back. Hollow Knight: Silksong does the same with a cocoon holding Hornet's rosaries, and it's harder than the first game from the opening hours. Dead Cells is a roguelite: every death sends you back to the start, and any cells you haven't spent at the end of a level are lost. It has the highest score in the guide, Overwhelmingly Positive, 97% of 156,934.
| Game | Steam reviews (PC) | Cheapest account, with fees |
|---|---|---|
| Hollow Knight | Overwhelmingly Positive, 96% (506,160) | € (with coupon GOCDKEYS15) |
| Hollow Knight: Silksong | Very Positive, 89% (389,386) | € (with coupon GOCDKEYS15) |
| Dead Cells | Overwhelmingly Positive, 97% (156,934) | € (with coupon Gocdkeys) |
Which one should you play first?
If you've never finished a souls-like, Another Crab's Treasure lets you tune the difficulty and still teaches you the whole routine. Anyone who wants the source should go to Dark Souls Remastered; if you'd rather shoot, Remnant is the one where a European code costs least over the account. Of the 2D ones, Ender Magnolia has the best score, and Blasphemous is the most Souls in spirit. Sifu is for people who prefer to learn one fight properly over grinding levels, and Dead Cells is the easiest to pick up for twenty minutes in handheld mode.
