The end of the world turns out to suit a handheld rather well. On Switch you can fight machines as an android on an Earth that humans abandoned, drive a ship on wheels across a dried-up seabed, ride out a nuclear winter in the Moscow metro or rebuild a workshop in a town that grew up over the ruins of the old world. Some of these are fast, loud shooters. Others are quiet enough to play in bed.

To build the list we took the games Steam tags as Post-apocalyptic on PC, looked up their Switch and Switch 2 versions on Gocdkeys and kept the ones with offers in stock this morning. That left seventeen. The Steam reviews we quote are for the PC version, because the Nintendo eShop doesn't publish user reviews.

eShop or someone else's account: know what you're buying

Most of what's on sale for these games is accounts, not eShop codes. Only five of the seventeen had a reseller eShop code in stock this morning: NieR:Automata, Zombie Army Trilogy, World War Z, Beyond a Steel Sky and My Time at Portia, and Portia's is for the US eShop.

  • eShop code: you redeem it on your own Nintendo account and the game is yours. Check the region; a European code works on accounts from Spain, France, Germany or the UK. Our guide explains how to redeem eShop codes.
  • Account: the seller gives you the username and password of a Nintendo account that already owns the game. You add it to your console and download from there, but the game never reaches your own account, and if the seller takes the account back, you lose it. This is how setting one up works.

Every offer below comes with two figures: the price with the coupon, and what you actually pay once the payment fee is added. Where there's a European code at a sensible price, that's what we'd buy.

Shooting and slashing: NieR:Automata, DOOM Eternal, Metro 2033 Redux and Ghostrunner

NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition is the one we'd start with. Humanity has fled to the Moon, and androids 2B and 9S are sent down to fight the machines that have taken over Earth. PlatinumGames handles the combat, which is fast and flashy, and Square Enix and Yoko Taro handle a story that keeps revealing itself over several playthroughs. This edition includes the DLC. 88% of its 115,890 Steam reviews are positive.

It's also one of the few here with a European eShop code: €12.59 with coupon OCTGOC10 (€13.94 with fees) at Kinguin. It has only been cheaper on 3 of the 179 days we've tracked it. Difmark's account costs €10.91 with coupon Gocdkeys (€11.40 with fees), but for two and a half euros more the code puts the game on your own account, so that's the one to buy NieR:Automata key.

DOOM Eternal is id Software's demon-slaying shooter, set on an Earth overrun by Hell. It's built around constant movement: you get health, armour and ammo by killing in specific ways, so standing still is the worst thing you can do. Steam players give the PC version 91% positive out of 187,866. Only accounts here: Key4Games has one at €9.32 with GOCDKEYS15 (€9.99 with fees), its lowest price in 399 days of tracking.

Metro 2033 Redux goes the other way: slow and tense. After a nuclear war, Moscow's survivors live in the metro tunnels, and Artyom has to cross them and go up to the irradiated surface with a gas mask and a limited supply of filters. Ammunition is also currency, so every shot costs you something. It's based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel. Key4Games' account costs €10.11 with GOCDKEYS15 (€10.82 with fees).

Ghostrunner is a first-person parkour and sword game in the last tower where humanity survives. You run on walls, slow down time to dodge bullets and die from a single hit, and so do most enemies. Restarts are instant, which you'll be grateful for. Key4Games' account costs €18.05 with GOCDKEYS15 (€19.12 with fees).

Zombies with friends: Zombie Army Trilogy and World War Z

Zombie Army Trilogy comes from Rebellion and the Sniper Elite series: an alternate Second World War in which Hitler raises an army of the dead. It bundles three campaigns, plays well solo and better in co-op, and keeps the series' slow-motion sniper shots. 85% of its 14,336 Steam reviews are positive. Gameboost has a European code at €8.27 with GCDK13 (€8.65 with fees); Key4Games' account is €5.70 with GOCDKEYS15 (€6.21 with fees).

World War Z, from Saber Interactive, is a co-op shooter against hordes of zombies that pile up into towers to climb walls. Here we'd hold back on the code. Gameboost's European one costs €9.46 with GCDK13 (€9.89 with fees), but it has been cheaper on 207 of the 269 days we've tracked it, with a low of €4.79 (without fees). Set a price alert and wait for it to drop. Key4Games' account costs €5.05 with GOCDKEYS15 (€5.53 with fees).

Role-playing in the ruins: Biomutant, Daemon X Machina, METAL MAX Xeno Reborn, Hyper Light Drifter and Eastward

Biomutant is an open-world action RPG from Experiment 101 and THQ Nordic. You play a mutated furry creature in a poisoned world whose Tree of Life is dying, mixing kung fu with guns you build from scrap. Difmark's account costs €20.32 with Gocdkeys (€21.23 with fees).

Daemon X Machina is Marvelous's mech game: you pilot an Arsenal as a mercenary in a world wrecked by a falling moon and the rogue machines that came with it, and you rebuild your mech between missions with parts from the ones you shoot down. It has the widest price gap on the list. Nintendo's UK eShop asks €59.51 and Amazon France €36.99 (both no fees), while Key4Games' account costs €11.12 with GOCDKEYS15 (€11.87 with fees).

METAL MAX Xeno Reborn is for people who like tanks more than swords. It's a Japanese RPG from 24Frame and Kadokawa set in a ruined city, where you hunt down the machines that wiped out humanity and customise your tank part by part. It's the weakest-rated here on Steam, Mixed with 65% of 447 reviews, and also one of the most expensive: Key4Games' account costs €23.11 with GOCDKEYS15 (€24.41 with fees).

Hyper Light Drifter tells its story without a single line of dialogue. Heart Machine's pixel-art action RPG follows the Drifter through the ruins of a lost civilisation, with quick, demanding combat built around dashing and slashing. 93% of its 15,658 Steam reviews are positive. Key4Games' account costs €11.55 with GOCDKEYS15 (€12.32 with fees).

Eastward, from Pixpil and published by Chucklefish, follows a miner called John and Sam, a girl with strange powers, as they leave their underground town for a surface world threatened by a deadly miasma. It plays like a top-down Zelda with lovingly detailed pixel art. Key4Games' account costs €13.94 with GOCDKEYS15 (€14.82 with fees).

Calmer ends of the world: My Time at Portia, Beyond a Steel Sky, FAR: Lone Sails and 1000xRESIST

My Time at Portia is the friendliest apocalypse on the list. Pathea's game puts you in charge of a workshop in Portia, a town built long after the old world collapsed. You gather materials, craft, take commissions, dig through ruins for old tech and get to know the neighbours. The only offer is a US eShop code at Gamivo for €5.99 (€7.19 with fees), and it only redeems on a Nintendo account set to the United States.

Beyond a Steel Sky is Revolution Software's sequel to Beneath a Steel Sky. Robert Foster returns to Union City, a utopian city run by AI, to find a kidnapped child. It's a 3D point-and-click adventure with puzzles built around hacking the city's systems. Kinguin has a European code at €7.19 with OCTGOC10 (€8.11 with fees); Key4Games' account costs €5.99 with GOCDKEYS15 (€6.51 with fees).

FAR: Lone Sails has you keeping a huge wheeled vehicle moving across a dried-up seabed. You feed the boiler, raise the sails, fix what breaks and jump out to clear the way. There's no dialogue, and it's short. Steam rates it Overwhelmingly Positive, 95% of 24,570. Key4Games' account costs €7.94 with GOCDKEYS15 (€8.55 with fees).

1000xRESIST, from sunset visitor, is a narrative adventure about a community of clones who worship the one woman immune to a plague brought by aliens. It's mostly reading, exploring and talking, and its Steam reviews are among the best here, 95% positive out of 5,409. Key4Games' account costs €10.83 with GOCDKEYS15 (€11.57 with fees).

Only on Switch 2: Fallout 4 and Cronos: The New Dawn

Fallout 4 (Switch 2) needs a Switch 2. You leave Vault 111 into the ruins of Boston looking for your son, and along the way you build settlements, join factions and fill your inventory with junk you'll swear you need. The PC version has 81% positive reviews out of 291,444. It's accounts only: GamesPSN has one at €26.84 with GOCDKEYS16 (no fees).

Cronos: The New Dawn (Switch 2) is a survival horror from Bloober Team, the studio behind the Silent Hill 2 remake. You're a Traveler sent into a ruined city to pull people out of the past, fighting creatures that grow stronger by merging with each other. It also needs a Switch 2. 87% of its 8,054 Steam reviews are positive. Key4Games' account costs €31.06 with GOCDKEYS15 (€32.72 with fees), the most expensive offer on this list.
