The Epic Games Store is giving Astral Ascent away this week. The offer went live on Thursday 10 September and ends on Thursday 17 September, with LUFTRAUSERS free alongside it. Claim it in that window and it stays in your Epic library for good.
Hibernian Workshop both made and published it. It's a 2D action platformer built as a roguelite: you're stuck in the Garden, an astral prison guarded by twelve bosses called the Zodiacs, and every run is another escape attempt. You pick one of four heroes and combine dozens of spells differently from one attempt to the next. It works solo or with a second player in local co-op on the same screen.
Steam users rate it Very Positive, with 5,073 positive reviews and 324 negative, and it has a Metascore of 86.
What the free Epic copy gives you, and what it doesn't
The copy you claim costs nothing and you keep it. It just lives on Epic. It won't show up in your Steam library, it won't unlock Steam achievements, and you can't move it over to Steam later.
That starts to matter with the DLC. The three add-ons in our catalogue are all sold as Steam Keys, and DLC activated on Steam needs the base game on Steam too, so a free Epic copy won't help you there.
Plenty of people won't mind. If you mostly play on a Steam Deck, though, or you simply want every game in one library, have a look at what the Steam version costs before deciding.
Steam Key offers from €2.35 with fees
We read these prices on 13 September at 05:50 UTC, and they shift during the day. They're sorted by what you pay once each store adds its payment fee, which isn't always the order the base prices suggest:
- Difmark Digital Keys: €2.25 with coupon Gocdkeys (€2.35 with fees), Steam Key
- Kinguin: €2.12 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€2.64 with fees), Steam Key
- Driffle: €2.17 with coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€2.65 with fees), Steam Key
- Gamivo: €1.93 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€2.75 with fees), Steam Key
- Eneba: €2.06 with coupon Gocdkeys10 (€2.78 with fees), Steam Key
- G2A: €2.57 with coupon GCKG2AU1M4D (€2.86 with fees), Steam Key
- Instant Gaming: €2.89, no fees, Steam Key
Gamivo has the lowest base price of the lot, but once the fee goes on, its Steam Key comes to €2.75 and slips to fourth. We found 23 Steam Key offers in total, plus a single Steam Gift at G2A for €23.54 (€23.83 with fees). That Gift is barely cheaper than the Steam store itself, which charges €24.50 with no fees.
Our price history for the Steam Key, which leaves fees out, has a median of €7.44 and a lowest recorded price of €2.00 on 14 May. Today's base prices are about as low as this key has ever been in our records.
Yamat, The Outer Reaches and Celestial Haven
All three DLC are Steam Keys, so they're only useful if you own the game on Steam. The cheapest offers this morning:
- Yamat the Breach Traveler: €3.19, no fees, at CDKeys, Steam Key. On Steam it's €4.99, no fees.
- The Outer Reaches: €5.12 with coupon SEPGOC10 at Kinguin (€5.88 with fees), Steam Key. On Steam it's €9.75, no fees.
- Celestial Haven: €1.96 with coupon GCKG2AU1M4D at G2A (€2.25 with fees), Steam Key. On Steam it's €2.99, no fees.
The Outer Reaches is where buying a key rather than going through Steam saves you the most.
Epic, Steam, or both
If you already play on Epic, or you don't care which launcher a game opens in, claim Astral Ascent before Thursday 17 September and you're done.
If your library is on Steam, or you think you'll want the DLC at some point, Difmark's Steam Key at €2.25 with coupon Gocdkeys (€2.35 with fees) is a small outlay. Every store we track, the Gift included, is on our buy Astral Ascent key page.
You can also do both: take the Epic copy while it's free, and pick up the Steam Key later if the DLC ever tempts you.
