If Aeterna Lucis is on your December list, the sensible thing is to play Aeterna Noctis first, and the price is not going to stop you. This morning the first game's cheapest Steam Key was €1.78 with coupon SEAL17CKD, €2.32 once the payment fee goes on, and our records, which leave fees out, have had it sitting around €2 for six months.
What Aeternum Game Studios has announced
Aeternum Game Studios has put Aeterna Lucis, the sequel to Aeterna Noctis, on 3 December. It goes to PC through Steam, and to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Switch, at an announced €24.99. The sequel isn't in our catalogue yet, so that figure is all we have on it.
The studio spent an extra year on it. Here's where it says that year went:
- exploration with no loading screens
- real-time dynamic lighting
- a drawn, illustrated map in place of a schematic one
- two difficulty modes: Aeterna, which puts the story first, and Lucis, the demanding one
Aeterna Noctis, briefly
The first game is a hard 2D metroidvania from the same Spanish studio, and most of that difficulty lives in the platforming, which asks for very precise jumps. Steam has it at Mostly Positive, 1,289 positive against 407 negative, or roughly one unhappy review in every four.
Six months at around €2
Our Steam Key history has a median of €3.28 and a low of €2.00, set on 25 February. Neither figure carries payment fees.
The monthly lows below take in every offer for the game, whatever the format, and again ignore fees and coupons:
| Month | Lowest offer (no fees, no coupons, all formats) |
|---|---|
| April | €2.00 |
| May | €2.00 |
| June | €2.03 |
| July | €1.59 |
| August | €1.15 |
| September | €1.97 |
Bar the summer dip, it hasn't really moved since spring. Remember that these numbers sit a touch below what the checkout asks, because the fee isn't in them.
Buy it today or wait for December?
You might expect the sequel's announcement to drag the first game lower. There's hardly any room left for that to happen. At these prices, buying today rather than on 3 December is a matter of cents.
Compare that with Steam, where Aeterna Noctis costs €29.99 with no fees. Green Man Gaming and Humble Bundle also sell the Steam version at €29.99, no fees. Against those, the key offers save you more than 90%.
Then there's the calendar. The sequel is nearly three months out, which is room enough to get through the first game if you start soon.
