Steam still asks € for the Standard edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. On our The Witcher 3 price page there are 36 live offers spread over 15 shops, and the cheapest real licence in there is a GOG Key at € (with coupon gocdkeys) from Topgift. That gap is old news. What is new is that it now has a date attached to it.
On 25 August, at the Gamescom Opening Night Live, CD Projekt RED announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered. It arrives on 29 September, and for most people it is not something you buy. It is something you are given, provided you already own the game.
What CD Projekt RED said, word for word
The whole thing rests on one sentence, and it is worth quoting it exactly as the studio wrote it: “Available as a free upgrade to current The Witcher 3 owners on qualifying platforms, Remastered also includes the acclaimed Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions.”
Two halves, two consequences. The upgrade costs owners nothing. And the remastered package ships with both expansions inside it, which is the half nobody seems to be reading.
On PC the remaster brings real-time path tracing, with support for DLSS 4.5, FSR 4.0 and XeSS 2.0; that detail was published by DSOGaming. The expansion announced in the same breath, Songs of the Past, has a release window two years out and confirmed Gwent content, and it changes nothing about what you buy this month.
Base owners come out of this better than Complete owners
Own a plain Standard copy and you do well. You get the technical work, and you get Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, neither of which you had. Own the Complete Edition or the GOTY and you already have those expansions, so what reaches you on 29 September is the graphics and nothing more.
Read that the other way round and you have the point of this article. Paying extra today for a bundle whose selling point is the two expansions means paying for something scheduled to appear in your library for free next month.
Our own prices put a figure on it. The cheapest Complete Ed. is € (with coupon GCDKGamivo) at Gamivo. The cheapest GOG Key, base game only, is € (with coupon gocdkeys). Around seven euros between the two, and those seven euros are buying the expansions.
The same applies to buying the add-ons piecemeal. The Expansion Pass is at € (with coupon GCDK14DEAL), Hearts of Stone alone at €, Blood and Wine alone at € (with coupon Gocdkeys). Sensible money on any other week. This week it is money spent on the thing that is coming anyway.

There is a second entry on the site for the Game of the Year edition. Its cheapest GOG Key is € (with coupon gocdkeys), a few cents below the one above, while its cheapest GOTY Ed. asks € (with coupon GCDK14DEAL) against € for the GOTY Ed. on the main page. Worth checking both before you assume one door is cheaper than the other.
Two euros and change buys you somebody else's password
The lowest number on the page is a Steam Account at € (with coupon Gocdkeys), and there is exactly one of them. What changes hands is the login of an account another person created. The game lives in that account. It never becomes yours.
That trade has always been poor. Today it is worse, for a reason specific to this announcement: if the free upgrade is delivered to the account that owns the game, that account is not yours. You would be paying two euros to watch a stranger's library get remastered.
Steam Gift is a legitimate format and still the wrong call here. The cheapest is € (with coupon GOCDKEYS10), four times the GOG Key and a couple of euros under what Steam itself charges. Straight to the list if you want to check that for yourself: buy The Witcher 3 key.
Who exactly qualifies? Nobody has said yet
Three loose ends, and we are not going to tidy any of them up for the sake of a cleaner article.
The first is the phrase “qualifying platforms”. CD Projekt RED used those two words and has not published the list. The game is available on PC, Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series, which is a different statement from saying all four qualify.
The second is that the sources do not agree on scope. CD Projekt RED's own wording says “current The Witcher 3 owners”, which reads as anybody who owns it. DSOGaming reported the upgrade as free for owners of the Complete Edition. Those two sentences cannot both be true, and nobody has cleared it up.
The third is whether the remaster will also be sold on its own, and at what price. We have nothing on that, so we are not going to guess.
Our pick, and the condition attached to it
Some context for the figure at the top. Our price record on this game goes back more than nine years and holds over 4,300 entries, and its ceiling is 49,99 € at the shop window – exactly what Steam still asks for the Standard today. The official price has not moved in all that time. Every discount this game has ever had lives in the key shops. Do keep in mind that the record is shop-window pricing with no coupon, while the prices above already have the coupon applied.
So: the GOG Key at Topgift, today at € (with coupon gocdkeys). If you would rather stay off GOG, the cheapest Standard is € at Gaming Dragons — bearing in mind that Standard is a catch-all label, so open the offer and check where it redeems before paying. And if you do not want to depend on the upgrade at all, the cheapest Complete Ed. at € (with coupon GCDKGamivo) hands you both expansions tonight, no waiting.
Now the part we are not going to bury. Buying today is a bet, small but real: until that platform list exists, nobody can promise you that a GOG copy qualifies, or a Steam one. What makes the bet reasonable is its size. Ten euros and change is under a quarter of Steam's asking price, and if the upgrade never reaches you, you are still left owning a game Steam has at Overwhelmingly Positive with 786.103 positive reviews out of 818.857, and a 93 on Metacritic, developed and published by CD PROJEKT RED. There are worse ways to lose a bet.
