Shape of Dreams turned up on Xbox Series X|S with no warning at all, and it walked straight into Xbox Game Pass on the same day. There was no countdown and no pre-order week: the announcement and the download button arrived together, so anyone whose subscription covers it could be playing within minutes.
The console release brings an update with it, The Starless Path, which adds a new playable character called Cetus along with further content. The game also carries Xbox Play Anywhere, and the crossplay is described as complete.
That is the news. Underneath it sits the question we get every single time a game does this: if you can play it inside a subscription, is there still a reason to pay for a copy? We read the whole PC page on 17 September to answer that. Shops move their prices daily, so treat every figure below as a photograph of that morning.
An action roguelite built around short runs
If the name is new to you, here is the shape of it. Shape of Dreams is an action roguelite: you take a character into a dungeon run, you fight in real time using the abilities that character carries plus the ones you pick up on the way down, and when the run ends you start another one a little stronger than the last. Short sessions, designed to be repeated.
The reception is not in any doubt. On Steam the verdict is Very Positive across 15,769 reviews. It reached PC through early access first, which explains a review count that big for a game plenty of people are only meeting now.
Cetus, Play Anywhere and the two things left unsaid
Cetus is the selling point of the update: one more character to take underground, next to the other content the studio has folded in for the console launch. Xbox Play Anywhere is the label Microsoft uses when a single digital purchase covers the Xbox version and the PC version, and this game carries it.
Two gaps in the announcement, and we are not going to paper over them. Nobody has detailed which Game Pass tier includes the game, so check your own before you plan the evening around it. And the crossplay wording does not confirm PC players and Xbox players sharing a session, so we will leave that exactly where the studio left it.
Thirty-five offers, twenty-one shops, one small game
This is where our page gets interesting. Shape of Dreams has 35 live offers spread across 21 different shops, which is a remarkable amount of competition for a game this size. Most of it is the format you actually want: 27 of those offers are Standard copies, five are Steam Gift and three are Steam Account.
The cheap end, with every price given twice. First what the shop advertises, then what leaves your card once its payment fee is added:
- Driffle: €6.03 with the coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€6.65 with fees), Standard.
- Gameboost: €6.92 with the coupon GCDK13 (€7.24 with fees), Standard.
- Instant Gaming: €7.29, no fees, Standard.
- Eneba: €6.25 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€7.33 with fees), Standard.
- Gamivo: €6.14 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€7.34 with fees), Standard.
- Cdkeys Com: €7.39, no fees, Standard.
At the far end of the same page, Humble Bundle asks €24.99 with fees for a Standard copy. Almost four times the cheapest offer, for the identical game. Worth remembering the next time a price looks reasonable on its own, with nothing to compare it against.
Steam itself has been sitting at €17.15 for the past few days, after asking €24.50 up to 14 September. Those two are our own readings, always without payment fees and without any coupon.
Four euros and change buys somebody else's login
The cheapest thing on the whole page is Difmark at €4.19 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€4.38 with fees), and the format is Steam Account. That is not a copy of the game. You are handed the details of an account that belongs to someone else, you log into it to play, and Shape of Dreams never lands in your own library. The owner can change the password the day it suits them, and your evening ends there.
What does that buy you? A saving of a bit over two euros against Driffle's Standard copy. And the other shared accounts on the page are not even cheap: Kinguin wants €8.26 with the coupon SEPGOC10 (€9.27 with fees) for one, more than any genuine copy in the group above. Read the format before you read the number.
Five months with the floor in exactly the same place
If your instinct is to wait for a sale, our own history says there is nothing on the way. We have 143 days of readings on this game, 3,273 of them, and the monthly low has been €4.99 in September, August, July, June and May, with April a shade higher at €5.49. A floor that flat means the drop you are holding out for already happened, and then it stayed. You can set a price alert and forget about it, but do not build a plan around a crash that the numbers say is not coming.
Play it on the subscription, or own it?
If Game Pass covers you, start there. It costs nothing extra, it is available right now, and three runs will tell you more about whether this genre is for you than any review will.
If you play on PC, or if you want the game to still be yours the day it leaves the catalogue, buy Shape of Dreams key as a Standard copy and walk past the accounts. Driffle at €6.65 with fees is the cheapest route that ends with the game in your library, and it is well under half of what Steam is charging for the same thing.
