Build 42 went stable on 29 July 2026, two years after it first appeared in unstable form, and a lot of people are picking Project Zomboid up for the first time because of it. If you look at the live listings for Project Zomboid on PC you will notice something odd: almost every cheap offer carries a region label, and almost none of them is a plain key. Here is what those labels mean before you buy.

What Build 42 actually changed

Version 42.20 is the biggest update the game has had. It adds animal husbandry, basements, a much deeper crafting and building system, reworked lighting, better controller support, and a substantially expanded Knox Country map. The one thing to know before you install it: Build 41 saves are not compatible. If you have an ongoing run, finish it first, because the update will not carry it over.

Why nearly every cheap listing is a Steam Gift

This is the part that is specific to Project Zomboid. On most games the cheap tier is a plain key. Here the cheap tier is dominated by Steam Gift, and the gap is enormous: gift listings sit in the four-euro range while the cheapest ordinary Standard copy is around 15.21 (with coupon SEAL17CDK).

A Steam Gift is not a code you type in. The seller owns a copy and transfers it to you as a Steam gift, which means the game does end up on your account, but the delivery involves the seller acting on their end. Two consequences follow: it is not always instant, and it will not work if the game is already in your library.

Reading the region label

Region is the second half of the puzzle, and on this game it moves the price more than the choice of shop does:

  • UK - currently the cheapest at 3.36 (with coupon GCDKGamivo).
  • Global - no lock at all, at 3.41 (with coupon GCDKGamivo).
  • Europe - at 3.41 (with coupon GCDKGamivo).
  • US - at 4.41 (with coupon JULGOC10).

The reason the UK listing is cheapest is not that UK sellers are more generous. It is that the publisher prices the game differently per market, and resellers buy where it is cheapest. The saving is real, but it comes with a restriction attached.

What happens if you pick the wrong region

A region-locked copy is tied to the market your Steam account is registered to. If your account country does not match, the redemption or the gift acceptance fails, and you are left arguing with a seller instead of playing. Some sellers are strict about this, some are not, but you should assume the lock is enforced.

The safe default: if the Global listing is within a euro of the regional one, take Global. The few cents you save on a locked copy are not worth a failed delivery on a game that costs less than a sandwich.

Why we do not tell you to use a VPN

You will find guides suggesting you change your Steam region with a VPN to unlock cheaper pricing. We do not recommend it, for practical reasons rather than moral ones. Steam ties your store country to your payment method and limits how often it can change; a mismatch can lock your wallet, and repeated region hopping is exactly the pattern that triggers account restrictions. Buying a Global copy costs a euro more and carries none of that risk.

Project Zomboid buying FAQ

Do I need to buy Build 42 separately?

No. Build 42 is a free update to the base game. Any copy you buy today includes it.

Will my Build 41 save still work?

No. Build 41 saves are not compatible with Build 42. Wrap up any run you care about before updating.

Is a Steam Gift safe?

The game does land on your own account, which puts it well ahead of an account listing. The caveats are delivery time and the fact that it cannot be applied if you already own the game.

Which listing should I pick?

Global if the price is close, since it has no restriction. A regional copy only makes sense if your Steam account is registered in that region.

The verdict

Build 42 is a genuine reason to start a new run, and the game is cheap in every configuration. Just make the choice deliberately: check the format column and the region label together, and compare them all on the Project Zomboid comparison page.
