Halo: Campaign Evolved is out. It launched worldwide on 28 July 2026, the first post-release patch landed the day after, and it is on Game Pass from day one. That changes the question completely: it is no longer when to buy it, but whether to buy it at all and, if you do, which storefront to activate it on. Prices below are pulled live from our comparison for Halo Campaign Evolved on PC.

What has changed since launch

Halo Studios shipped the first post-release update, patch 16.754.404, on 29 July 2026 across every platform. It is a stability and AI pass rather than a content drop:

  • Crash fixes when watching or skipping the opening cinematic of The Maw, plus stability work on Pillar of Autumn.
  • Stability fixes for AMD cards running FSR on drivers 26.6.2 and 26.6.4, and new driver-compatibility warnings for both AMD and NVIDIA.
  • Less hitching for players with large friend lists, and Xbox Gamertags now displayed throughout account linking for Steam and PlayStation players.
  • Enemy AI corrections: Jackals now patrol the hangar hallway on The Truth and Reconciliation, Hunters near the Cartographer engage consistently, Spec Ops Elites at Rally Point Delta behave as intended, and a charged plasma pistol shot no longer instantly kills a fully shielded player.

Download sizes are wildly uneven between platforms: roughly 21 GB on Steam, 13 GB on Xbox, 7 GB on PlayStation and only 4 GB on the Microsoft Store and Xbox app on PC. Worth knowing before you pick a storefront on a slow or metered connection.

Two other things happened in the opening days. Several free Master Chief armour skins went out, some added automatically the first time you launch the game and others redeemed as codes on Halo Waypoint. And on PC a modder published a local split-screen co-op mod on release day, after finding that the PC build ships with split-screen already switched on in its config, with the HUD layouts, sign-in screens and audio parameters still in the files. Split-screen is an official feature on console; on PC it is unofficial, works best with a controller for every player, and is not supported by Halo Studios.

Game Pass or buy it?

Settle this first, because for a lot of readers it makes the rest of the page irrelevant. Halo: Campaign Evolved is included on day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. It is not in Game Pass Essential, and Game Pass Premium subscribers are not expected to get it until roughly a year after launch.

So if you already pay for Ultimate or PC Game Pass, you have the game and buying a copy makes no sense. If you do not subscribe, the honest comparison is a few months of subscription against owning it outright, and for a campaign you will finish in a weekend the subscription usually wins. If you want it permanently, it does not: owning starts at 31.55 (with coupon GCDK14DEAL) on the Play Anywhere listing.

Steam or Microsoft Store: what you are actually choosing

On PC the game is sold on two different storefronts, and they are not interchangeable:

  • Steam - activates in your Steam library and is PC only. That is the PC listing.
  • Microsoft Store / Xbox Play Anywhere - a single purchase covers the Microsoft Store on PC and Xbox Series X|S. Those codes live on the Xbox and Play Anywhere listing, from 31.55 (with coupon GCDK14DEAL) at K4G.

Cross-play and cross-progression run across Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam and PlayStation 5, so your campaign progress follows you either way. What does not follow you is the purchase itself: a Steam code is Steam and nothing else, a Play Anywhere code is Microsoft Store plus Xbox.

The thing our comparison shows and the news stories do not

This is the part worth the click. Across every live listing we track, there is no discounted legitimate Steam code for this game. Filter our comparison by format and the picture is unambiguous:

  • Steam, Standard - 59.99. That is Valve's own list price. No reseller is undercutting it with a real Steam code.
  • Steam Gift - 52.32 (with coupon AUGGOC10). A gift transfer rather than a code, and it lands close to or above list price anyway.
  • Steam Account - 16.79 (with coupon Gocdkeys). The lowest figure on the whole page, and the one to be careful with: you are buying login details for an account that already owns the game. It never enters your library and it is not yours.
  • Windows Store Key - 33.20 (with coupon GOCDKEYS10) from Eneba. A real code you redeem on your own account.
  • Play Anywhere key, PC and Xbox - 31.55 (with coupon GCDK14DEAL) from K4G.

Read that list once and the recommendation writes itself. The only route to a copy you genuinely own, meaningfully below list price, is the Microsoft Store / Play Anywhere code, and that route also hands you the Xbox version for the same money. If you specifically want the game sitting in Steam, you pay Valve's price and there is no trick around it.

The cheapest number on any comparison page for this game is a Steam Account listing, not a code. Check the format label before you assume one seller is simply cheaper than the rest.

Standard or Premium Edition?

The Premium Edition's headline perk was early access from 23 July. That window has closed - the game is out for everybody, so early access is no longer something you can buy. What remains is the bonus content, at 42.73 (with coupon AUGGOC10) on the Play Anywhere listing against 31.55 (with coupon GCDK14DEAL) for the Standard code. Unless you specifically want the extras, Standard is now the obvious pick, which was not the case two weeks ago.

Halo Campaign Evolved FAQ

Is Halo Campaign Evolved on Game Pass?

Yes, from day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. It is not on Game Pass Essential, and Premium subscribers are expected to wait around a year from launch.

Does the PC version have split-screen co-op?

Not officially. Split-screen is a console feature, but the PC build ships with the code and layouts still present, and a community mod released on launch day switches it on. It is unsupported, and in practice every player needs a controller.

Does a Steam code work on Xbox?

No. A Steam code is PC only. A Microsoft Store / Play Anywhere code is the one that covers both PC and Xbox Series X|S from a single purchase.

Does progress carry across Steam, Xbox and PlayStation?

Yes. Cross-play and cross-progression are supported across Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam and PlayStation 5.

Is the lowest price on the page the best buy?

Not here. The lowest entry is a Steam Account rather than a code. Filter by Windows Store Key or Play Anywhere if you want something that redeems on your own account.

The verdict

If you subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, the decision is already made: play it, do not buy it. If you want to keep the game, the Play Anywhere code is the only route that is genuinely below list price and it covers PC and Xbox at once. A Steam copy costs what Valve charges, full stop. Compare both on the PC page and the Xbox and Play Anywhere page.
