GG.deals ran the Frostburn Update story yesterday, with discounts of up to 40% attached to it. Both halves are true. What a headline like that cannot tell you is which offer the discount actually lands on, and with Far Far West that turns out to be the whole question: the two lowest numbers on our page today buy you access to somebody else’s account.
Difmark and Gamivo are selling a login, not a copy
The page opens with Difmark at 5.99 euros and the format printed next to it says Steam Account. Gamivo is right behind at 6.80 euros with the same arrangement. What changes hands is a username and a password for a profile that still belongs to the seller. Your hours, your achievements and your saves pile up over there, nothing appears in your own library, and the day that password changes you have no game and nobody to complain to. The first code you redeem yourself costs 7.95 euros
Skip those two and you land on CJS-CDKeys at 7.95 euros, a Standard offer that arrives as a Steam Key. Steam sells that same Standard for 15.99 euros, so the honest version of the headline is that a copy of Far Far West you actually keep costs a shade under half of what Valve charges for it. What happens when the cheapest seller runs out of stock
There is 4.59 euros of empty air between that 7.95 and the next redeemable code, an Eneba offer at 12.54 euros. One seller is holding the bottom of the page up on its own. When that stock goes, Far Far West lands straight back in the band that starts at that same Eneba code and runs to 15.19 euros at Greenmangaming: 13.03 at CJS-CDKeys and a second offer at the same figure, 13.48 at Gamivo, 13.61 at Eneba again, 13.70 at Kinguin, 13.79 at Gamivo, 13.85 back at CJS-CDKeys, 13.91 at K4G, 13.99 at Instant Gaming, 14.35 at K4G once more, 14.79 at Gameboost and 15.09 at Fanatical. All of them Standard, all of them Steam Keys. One step higher, Difmark Digital Keys wants 15.85 euros for the same Standard, fourteen cents under what Valve charges.
Then comes the part of the page nobody should be buying from. G2A wants 16.19 euros for a Standard and puts two more up at 17.28, GamersGate asks 19.99, and every one of them is dearer than Valve. Those two at 17.28 even cost more than a G2A Steam Gift at 17.09 and a Driffle Steam Gift at 17.26, which is a fair warning that reading down the prices tells you nothing about what you are buying. The Steam Gift route opens at 14.23 euros with Gamivo and climbs to 23.18: a gift is accepted once into a library and never moves again, so paying more for one than for a code you redeem yourself is money thrown away. Valve has never asked this little for it
Worth a paragraph of its own, because it does not happen often. The 15.99 euros Steam charges today for the Standard is the lowest we have ever recorded on the official store for this game; across the months we have on file it sat between 17.99 and 19.99 euros. So the Frostburn discount did reach Steam. It reached the resellers harder, which is why the gap between the two is eight euros and change.
The 3.99 euro low, and why we cannot call it a code
Our record on the PC version holds 2,037 price checks. Month by month the cheapest offer has gone 10.99, 6.47, 4.99, 4.99 and 3.99 euros, while the monthly average over exactly the same stretch went 15.08, 14.76, 13.66, 12.95 and 13.27. Seven euros came off the floor and less than two off the middle. A gap that shape means one or two sellers cutting hard while thirteen shops stay exactly where they were.
Now the caveat, and it matters. Our price series stores the amount and the shop, not the format of each individual check, so we cannot tell you that the 3.99 euros was a redeemable code. It was set by Difmark, the same store selling a 5.99 euro Steam Account today, which makes another shared account at least as good an explanation as a very cheap licence. Read 3.99 as the lowest number we have seen go past and leave it there.
