GG.deals ran the Frostburn Update story yesterday and hung discounts of up to 40% on it. Nothing wrong with either claim. What a headline of that shape cannot tell you is which offer the discount actually lands on, and on Far Far West that is the entire question, because the two lowest numbers on our page today buy you access to somebody else's account.
Difmark and Gamivo are selling a login, not a copy
The page opens with Difmark at 5.99 euros, and the format printed beside it reads Steam Account. Gamivo sits just behind at 6.80 euros on the same terms. What changes hands is a username and a password for a profile the seller still owns. Your hours, your achievements and your saves all accumulate over there, nothing lands in your own library, and on the day that password is changed you have no game and nobody to take it up with. The first code you redeem yourself costs 7.95 euros
Step over those two and you reach CJS-CDKeys at 7.95 euros, a Standard offer delivered as a Steam Key. Steam sells the very same Standard for 15.99 euros, so the honest version of the headline is that a copy of Far Far West you get to keep costs a shade under half what Valve wants for it. What happens when the cheapest seller runs out of stock
Between that 7.95 and the next redeemable code, an Eneba offer at 12.54 euros, there is 4.59 euros of nothing at all. One seller is holding the floor up by itself. The day that stock runs dry, Far Far West drops straight back into the band that begins with that Eneba code and ends at 15.19 euros with Greenmangaming: 13.03 at CJS-CDKeys and a second offer at the same figure, 13.48 at Gamivo, 13.61 at Eneba again, 13.70 at Kinguin, 13.79 at Gamivo, 13.85 back at CJS-CDKeys, 13.91 at K4G, 13.99 at Instant Gaming, 14.35 at K4G once more, 14.79 at Gameboost and 15.09 at Fanatical. Standard, every one of them, and Steam Keys. Just past the official price, Difmark Digital Keys wants 15.85 euros for that same Standard, fourteen cents less than Valve asks.
After that comes the stretch of the page nobody should be shopping in. G2A wants 16.19 euros for a Standard and has two more up at 17.28, GamersGate asks 19.99, and all of them cost more than buying from Valve. The pair at 17.28 even beat a G2A Steam Gift at 17.09 and a Driffle Steam Gift at 17.26, which tells you how little the running order of the prices says about what you are actually buying. Steam Gift starts at 14.23 euros with Gamivo and runs up to 23.18: a gift goes into a library once and stays there, so paying more for one than for a code you redeem yourself is money down the drain. Valve has never asked this little for it
This one earns its own paragraph, because it does not come round often. The 15.99 euros Steam is charging today for the Standard is the lowest we have ever logged on the official store for this game; across the months we have on file it sat between 17.99 and 19.99 euros. So the Frostburn discount did reach Steam. It hit the resellers a good deal harder, which is why eight euros and change separate the two.
The 3.99 euro low, and why we cannot call it a code
Our record on the PC version holds 2,037 price checks. Month by month, the cheapest offer has run 10.99, 6.47, 4.99, 4.99 and 3.99 euros, while the monthly average across that same stretch went 15.08, 14.76, 13.66, 12.95 and 13.27. Seven euros came off the floor; under two came off the middle. A gap shaped like that is one or two sellers cutting hard while thirteen shops sit exactly where they were.
And now the caveat, which matters here. Our price series stores the amount and the shop for each check, but not its format, so we cannot promise you that the 3.99 euros was a redeemable code. Difmark set it, and Difmark is the store selling a 5.99 euro Steam Account today, so another shared account explains that reading at least as well as a very cheap licence would. Take 3.99 as the lowest figure we have watched go past, and no more than that.
