Chronicles: Medieval studio loses its funding: what it means for the game

Raw Power Games, the Copenhagen studio making Chronicles: Medieval, said on 30 October that its funding is gone. The statement, posted on X and Steam, blames circumstances outside the studio's control and says it can't keep developing the game without that money. It also speaks of a real risk of closing down.

It has not announced a cancellation, and it hasn't mentioned layoffs.

What Raw Power Games has told players so far

Nobody outside the studio knows who was paying for the game or why they pulled out, because Raw Power Games hasn't said. According to its statement, Early Access was within reach, and it's now talking to anyone who might be able to help. It admits it can't promise a happy ending. Whatever happens, good or bad, it says players will hear first.

What kind of game Chronicles: Medieval is

It's a sandbox-style, open-world medieval RPG that has drawn comparisons with Mount & Blade. It was unveiled at Summer Game Fest, with Early Access on Steam planned for next year. An exploration map and a heraldry system were shown recently, and that's about all we know of how it plays. The game isn't out, so there's no Steam score and there are no player reviews to go on.

The only Chronicles: Medieval offer we can find is a Steam account

Our comparison turned up one offer this morning and no keys at all: a Steam account at Difmark for €33.59 with the Gocdkeys coupon (€35.10 with fees). An account and a key are different things. A key activates on your own Steam profile, while an account gets you the login to someone else's. Here, that login would lead to a game that doesn't exist yet, so it gives you nothing to play today. We don't recommend it.

As far as we know there's no official sale of the game, and there's no information about purchases or refunds.

Wishlist Chronicles: Medieval on Steam and keep your money

With the game unreleased and its future unclear, we wouldn't pay anything for it. What the studio is asking for costs nothing: add it to your Steam wishlist and talk about it.

If a key ever turns up, you'll see it on the page to buy Chronicles Medieval key. A price alert will save you from having to keep checking.

Prices checked on the morning of 2 November.
