Blood Bowl 3 is changing hands and changing name. Slitherine, which has taken over publishing from Focus Home Interactive, is replacing it with Warhammer Blood Bowl, a reworked version of the same game. The part that matters for your wallet: if you own Blood Bowl 3, Warhammer Blood Bowl is yours for free, and your account comes with you as it is.
A Slitherine spokesperson confirmed this to PC Gamer on 7 October. The two games share one account system, so unspent Warpstone, cosmetics and any teams you paid for stay on your account. A note published in July talked about a free upgrade "this autumn" on PC and consoles. Neither a release date nor a price has been announced.
What carries over from Blood Bowl 3 and what is still open
| On your Blood Bowl 3 account | In Warhammer Blood Bowl |
|---|---|
| The game itself | Free upgrade |
| Unspent Warpstone | Kept, and still usable on cosmetics |
| Cosmetics you bought | Kept |
| Teams you bought | Kept |
| Teams released from now on | Not decided yet |
| Release date and price | Not announced |
The loose end is how new teams will be sold. Slitherine says it is "still thinking about how to handle teams". Some players expect a return to paid team DLC, the model Blood Bowl 2 used. Treat that as a guess: Slitherine has not said anything of the sort.
What the Steam playtest shows
A playtest has been running on Steam since 7 October. You sign up with the "Request Access" button on the Warhammer Blood Bowl store page, and places are handed out in waves.
The test build uses the most recent tabletop rulebook and adds Rumble, a new 7-a-side mode. Saving in the middle of a match, one of the features players asked for most, is finally in. The interface has been redesigned with live weather indicators, and the AI has been reworked. Two teams are missing from this phase: Tomb Kings and Bretonnians.
Blood Bowl 3 prices this morning
Because the upgrade is free, buying Blood Bowl 3 today is the simplest way to make sure you have Warhammer Blood Bowl when it arrives, without waiting for a price nobody has published. The cheapest Standard Edition we found is at K4G: €9.38 with the coupon GCDK14DEAL (€10.58 with fees), Steam Key. If you would rather not pay a payment fee at all, Fanatical has the same Steam Key for €11.99 (no fees).
Standard Edition or one of the bigger ones?
The offers also include Imperial, Black, Special and Brutal editions. What separates them from the Standard is extra content, and the price gap starts small: the Imperial Edition is €13.27 (no fees) at YUPLAY and the Black Edition €17.59 (no fees) at Instant Gaming, both Steam Keys. The Special and Brutal editions only start at €25.55 and €27.89 with fees.
For the game and the free upgrade, the Standard Edition is enough. Slitherine has confirmed that Warpstone, cosmetics and purchased teams carry over, but it has not said anything specific about the content of each edition. We would not pay extra for one just because of the new version.
Buy now or wait for a lower price?
Our history for this key puts the median at €10.96, and the lowest price we have seen is €7.48, on 1 February. Both figures exclude fees and coupons. K4G's price before the coupon is €10.91, right on the median, so this is a normal price rather than a deal.
It has been cheaper, which is the case for waiting. If you want to be in from day one of Warhammer Blood Bowl, though, a little over €10 with fees is a fair entry fee and there is not much to gain by holding off.
Happy to wait? Set a price alert and we will email you when it drops. Every store and format, fees included, is on the page to buy Blood Bowl 3 key.
