Vikings have given PC players far more than Valheim and Assassin's Creed Valhalla. There are colony builders where winter kills more settlers than any rival clan, turn-based RPGs drawn by hand, a couple of tiny games that cost about a euro, and Ninja Theory's two Hellblade games, which take Norse myth somewhere much darker. We picked sixteen, sorted them by the kind of game they are, and checked what each one costs this morning.
The table shows the cheapest key we found for each game, with the store and the format. The Steam column is the share of positive reviews, with the total number of reviews in brackets; a dash means we don't have that figure. Four of them come in under two euros even with fees: Jotun, Expeditions: Viking, Ancestors Legacy and Tribes of Midgard.

| Tiny Thor | 78% (209) | €3.59 (no fees) | Fanatical, Steam Key |
Unless the cell says otherwise, it's a Steam Key that works anywhere. Two exceptions are worth knowing before you click: the Thrones of Britannia key is for the Europe region, and the cheapest Hellblade II is a Windows Store Key, which doesn't go on Steam at all.
Survival with friends: Valheim, ASKA and Tribes of Midgard
Valheim
You start as a dead warrior, dropped by a Valkyrie into Valheim, a tenth world of Norse myth, with orders to prove yourself to Odin by hunting down his old enemies. How you get there is up to you and the friends on your server: chopping trees, putting up a longhouse that survives the first storm, smelting bronze and then iron, and eventually building a boat to cross a sea that is a lot less friendly than it looks. Iron Gate's game left early access with version 1.0 in September and sits at 93% positive from 472,007 Steam reviews, by far the most reviewed game here.
Steam sells it for €29.99. The cheapest key is at Driffle, €16.78 with the coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€17.79 with fees). Whether the 1.0 launch is a good moment to buy or a sale is worth waiting for is a question we looked at separately in Valheim 1.0: buy now or wait for a sale?
ASKA
Sand Sailor Studio's game opens the same way, axe in hand in a cold forest, and then goes somewhere else. You're the chief, and the villagers you bring in work on their own: give one the woodcutter's hut, another the hunting lodge, and the village keeps running while you're off exploring. On Steam it has 79% positive from 10,531 reviews ("Mostly Positive"). Gameboost has the key for €10.94 with GCDK13 (€11.44 with fees), well under the €24.99 it costs on Steam.
Tribes of Midgard
Less building, more fighting. Tribes of Midgard is a co-op action game with a roguelite structure: you defend the Seed of Yggdrasil in the middle of your village against waves of monsters and the occasional giant, and head out between attacks to gather what you need. We don't have Steam review data for it. The price is the easy part: €1.08 with Gocdkeys12 at HRKGame (€1.48 with fees).
Northgard, Bad North and Roots of Yggdrasil: building a clan that lasts
Northgard
Shiro Games sends you to a newly discovered continent with a clan chosen by its animal (wolf, stag, raven, bear and others), and you turn a handful of settlers into something that can survive. It plays like a slow real-time strategy game. You expand one territory at a time, put villagers on jobs and stock food for winters that eat through your stores and slow everything down. You can win by conquest, but also through fame, trade or knowledge, so not every game ends in a siege. On Steam it has 85% positive from 54,518 reviews.
Today the cheapest key happens to be the Definitive Edition, the most complete one: €5.53 with SEAL17CKD at Gameseal (€6.35 with fees). The page to buy Northgard key has every store, and these are the four cheapest offers right now:
Bad North
Here the Vikings are the ones arriving. Bad North gives you small, generated islands, a few squads and longships closing in from every side, and the whole game is deciding where each commander stands and when to pull back into the houses. Commanders you lose stay lost. Plausible Concept's game has 93% positive from 12,413 reviews.
It's a case where Steam is hard to beat: €2.99 there, against a Special Edition key at Gamivo for €1.79 with GCDKGamivo that comes to €2.60 once fees are added.
Roots of Yggdrasil
A roguelite city builder from ManaVoid Entertainment, set among the branches of the world tree. It's the least known game in this list, with only 300 Steam reviews, 85% of them positive. YUPLAY sells the key for €4.97 with no fees; Steam asks €19.50.
Historical wars: Thrones of Britannia and Ancestors Legacy
If what you want is shield walls and armies rather than gods, these two are the most down-to-earth games in the list.
Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia
Creative Assembly takes Total War to ninth-century Britain, after the great Viking invasions. You can lead an Anglo-Saxon kingdom, a Gaelic or Welsh one, or the Viking settlers themselves, with the series' usual split between a turn-based campaign map and real-time battles. Its Steam score is 70% positive from 12,343 reviews ("Mostly Positive"). The key is close to Steam's own price: Gamivo has a Europe-region key for €5.66 with GCDKGamivo (€6.85 with fees), and Steam sells it for €7.99.
Ancestors Legacy
Destructive Creations made a real-time strategy game that cares more about squads and battles than about base building, with campaigns for Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Germans and Slavs. 80% positive from 5,805 reviews. In proportion, this is the biggest gap in the whole list: €1.29 with no fees at Instant Gaming, against €23.20 on Steam.
Prefer to think every move through? Two turn-based RPGs
The Banner Saga 2
Stoic's trilogy is hand-drawn from top to bottom, and the second part picks up right where the first one ends. You lead a caravan through a world where the sun has stopped moving, decide who gets fed and who gets left behind, and fight turn-based battles on a grid with humans and varl, the horned giants of this world. You can import your save from the first game, so it's best played in order. On Steam: 89% positive from 3,189 reviews.
Gameboost has the key for €2.80 with GCDK13 (€2.94 with fees), against €24.99 on Steam. We left The Banner Saga 3 out of this list on purpose: today the only offers for it are expensive ones, in stores we don't recommend.
Expeditions: Viking
Your father dies and you inherit a small clan in Scandinavia, along with its debts and its enemies. Keeping it alive means sailing to Britain to trade, raid or make alliances, and fighting turn-based battles with a party you build yourself, where injuries and supplies follow you from one camp to the next. We have no Steam review data for it. YUPLAY sells the key for €1.14 with no fees.
Norse myth with a sword in hand: Valhalla and both Hellblades
Assassin's Creed Valhalla
Ubisoft's open world casts you as Eivor, a Norwegian raider who sails to England with the clan to build a new settlement. There are monasteries to raid from the longship, a village to grow, Anglo-Saxon politics to get tangled in and detours into Asgard. We don't have Steam review data for it in our database. G2A sells the Steam Key for €5.43 with GCKG2AT6V1P (€5.72 with fees). Editions and stores are covered in more detail in where to buy Assassin's Creed Valhalla cheap.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Senua is a Pict warrior who walks into Helheim to rescue the soul of the man she loved. Ninja Theory built the game around her psychosis, and the voices in her head are recorded so that, with headphones on, they move around you and comment on everything you do. Combat is simple. What stays with you is the sound and the puzzles built around perspective. 90% positive from 66,904 reviews.
The key is €5.41 with GCKG2AT6V1P at G2A (€5.70 with fees), against €29.99 on Steam. You'll also see a Steam Account at Gameseal for €2.80 with SEAL17CKD (€3.41 with fees). That's the login of somebody else's Steam account that already owns the game: you play from that profile, the game never reaches your library, and if the seller takes the account back, it's gone. We'd pay the difference and get the key.
Senua's Saga: Hellblade II
The sequel takes Senua to Iceland, and keeps the formula of the first: a linear journey, sound that does half the storytelling and very dark landscapes. Steam reviews: 86% positive from 9,487. On Steam it costs €49.99.
Check the format before buying. The cheapest offer is a Windows Store Key for the Europe region, which you redeem on a Microsoft account and play through the Xbox app on PC, not on Steam. At K4G it's €9.41 with GCDK14DEAL (€10.61 with fees).
Small and cheap: Jotun, Sons of Valhalla and Tiny Thor
Jotun
Thunder Lotus's first game is hand-drawn as well. Thora died without glory and has to earn her place in Valhalla by defeating the jotun, giant bosses that fill the screen, with quiet exploration in between and narration in Icelandic. 77% positive from 2,215 reviews ("Mostly Positive"). It's the cheapest game in this guide: €0.64 with OCTGOC10 at Kinguin (€1.04 with fees), when Steam charges €15.49.
Sons of Valhalla
Pixel Chest mixes side-scrolling pixel-art combat with base building and an army that follows you into battle. Its reviews are the weakest of the sixteen, 66% positive from 852 ("Mixed"), so it's for people who already like the idea. Gamivo has the Steam Key for €4.50 with GCDKGamivo (€5.41 with fees); Steam, €19.99. Kinguin lists a cheaper Steam Account at €3.08 with OCTGOC10 (€3.67 with fees), with the same catch we described for Hellblade.
Tiny Thor
A retro platformer from Asylum Square about a young Thor whose hammer bounces off walls and enemies. 78% positive from 209 reviews. Fanatical sells the key for €3.59 with no fees, against €19.99 on Steam.
Which ones would we buy today?
If you play with friends, Valheim is still the one, and the Driffle key saves you about twelve euros against Steam. If you'd rather wait for a lower price, set a price alert for Valheim and we'll email you when it drops.
Jotun, Expeditions: Viking, Ancestors Legacy and Tribes of Midgard come to €4.95 for all four, fees included. Hellblade at €5.70 with fees is the best story here for very little money. Bad North is the one to buy straight from Steam, and with Hellblade II, read the format twice.
Prices checked on the morning of 9 October.
