Gensokyo — A remote land isolated from the Outside World, where humans and youkai live side-by-side.

One day, the shrine maiden of Hakurei Shrine, Reimu Hakurei, spots mysterious pillars towering over various locations throughout Gensokyo.

These pillars signaled the start of the Spell Carnival, a festival hosted by Yukari Yakumo where one must put their Spell Cards on the line in battle.

In order to investigate the true intentions of Yukari Yakumo, who initiated the Spell Carnival so suddenly, Reimu Hakurei joins the fight for Spell Cards.

Faced with the lack of explanations and suspecting that something deeper might be at play, Reimu decides to participate in the carnival. Her goal is not just to fight, but to uncover the true reasons behind this sudden summons.

The game combines classic tactical RPG elements with the characteristic missile-hail combat style that defines the Touhou series. Battles take place on a grid, where it's vital to correctly position each character, dodge enemy attacks that flood the screen, and use special abilities at the right time. Planning and quick execution go hand in hand here: a solid pre-battle strategy is key to success.

Players must take advantage not only of their team's abilities but also of the combat environment. During battles, items with different effects will appear that can be used to their advantage, either to block projectiles or to obtain buffs. Additionally, certain attributes scattered around the field provide bonuses that can be decisive in achieving victory.

Between battles, the Hakurei Shrine serves as a refuge.
