The plot fits snugly around and between the events of the core Lord of the Rings trilogy, with your trio of heroes being sent on critically important support missions by iconic figures like Aragorn and Elrond.

Seamlessly hot-swap between three uniquely skilled characters. Combat, progression, and the ability to swap between each character makes this one of the better LOTR games ever crafted. Solo play is perfectly viable, particularly with the new hot-swapping and improved companion management, but co-op brings out the game's personality. There is something inherently fitting about experiencing a Lord of the Rings adventure as a Fellowship rather than treating it as another solitary RPG.

The interface has been updated, targeting has been improved, and the autosave system makes the game much less frustrating than it could otherwise be. None of these additions are going to completely transform the experience, but they do make War in the North more comfortable to play in 2026. The 60 FPS support is particularly welcome, giving combat a smoother feel and making movement more responsive. Target locking, clearer health, mana and experience displays, and improved menus also make the experience easier to navigate.

Its greatest achievement is to create a smaller, more personal war within Tolkien's enormous universe. Something that really grabbed attention when looking at this game was the fact that it wasn't telling the same stories we have seen numerous times before. The cast in this game is absolutely stellar. As a fan of Critical Role, hearing Laura Bailey and Liam O'Brien was awesome. Beyond those two, the cast is stacked with legendary voice actors, including Nolan North, Chris Edgerly, and John Cygan, just to name a few.
