New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja is a high-definition remake of the classic 1991 arcade platformer, bringing the prehistoric adventure of two cavemen heroes to modern platforms. Developed by Mr. Nutz Studio and published by Microids, this colorful action-platformer transports players to a Jurassic landscape where Joe and Mac must rescue their village's women from a gang of Neanderthals. The game combines side-scrolling combat with platforming challenges across varied environments filled with deadly dinosaurs and carnivorous plants.

The core gameplay loop centers on running, jumping, and fighting through 2D stages in authentic arcade style. Players collect weapons from eggs scattered throughout levels—ranging from stone axes to more powerful tools—but lose their equipped weapon upon taking damage, forcing strategic weapon management. The game features two primary modes: Arcade Mode, which faithfully recreates the original experience with six compact stages, and Extended Mode, which provides a longer campaign with additional levels. Both modes support single-player and 2-player local co-op, allowing friends to tackle the prehistoric challenges together.

What distinguishes this remake is its completely redesigned visual presentation. While maintaining the spirit of the original arcade game, New Joe & Mac features vibrant cartoon-style graphics with rich, layered environments that make the jungle and later volcanic areas visually distinct. The art direction preserves the quirky charm of the source material while delivering a modern aesthetic that appeals to both retro enthusiasts and contemporary players.

The game caters to arcade platformer fans who appreciate challenging, pattern-based gameplay and nostalgic design. Additional modes including Training, Boss Rush, Score Attack, and Speedrun provide varied ways to engage with the content. The difficulty remains deliberately punishing—a hallmark of arcade design—rewarding memorization and precision. With multiple difficulty options available, the game remains accessible to players of different skill levels while maintaining its core challenge for veterans.
