Mina the Hollower follows a skilled inventor and mouse named Mina, a Hollower who travels to Tenebrous Isle to discover why her Spark Generators have gone out. The game takes place in a 1700s gothic horror-inspired world where mythical creatures and anthropomorphic animals live alongside humans, primarily set on Tenebrous Isle with various levels surrounding the hub city of Ossex.

The core mechanic is "Hollowing," which grants Mina the ability to burrow underground for a short time as a way to traverse short distances quickly and cross gaps, while being invincible. Mina can dive underground at any time for a burst of invincibility frames, gap-crossing, and rapid repositioning. This completely replaces the standard dodge-roll.
