Set in the world of Lapis, Final Fantasy Resonance is a turn-based RPG featuring pixel art characters, environments, and cutscenes. Players take control of the Grandshelt knight Rain, his adoptive brother Lasswell, and the enigmatic maiden Fina as they endeavor to stop Veritas of the Dark and the Sworn Six of Paladia from menacing the world's eight elemental crystals.

The battle system is turn-based with four controllable characters in the party at once. Combat takes place along a timeline similar to the Octopath Traveler series, where the abilities used by each character determines their delay before their turn comes again. Characters can use their own abilities or those of their equipped vision, with some abilities costing MP. Enemies have a stagger meter that increases as party members hit their weaknesses. Once the stagger meter is full, enemies enter a staggered state where they take increased damage, while also giving party members an extra turn.

Visions are echoes of beloved Final Fantasy characters who fight alongside you with unique skills and abilities for deep party customization. A total of 26 visions are included, with each vision having its own upgrade progression and abilities mastered being available even if the vision itself is not equipped. Outside of combat, players are able to explore the world map freely, explore towns, take on quests, and delve into dungeons and solve puzzles within.
