The wilderness is fraught with constant danger, and the eternal storms are a threat that can crush your population at any moment. If one of your settlements falls, the expedition may end, but the game continues, as Against the Storm functions as a roguelike. This means that when you start a new adventure, you can keep the resources, upgrades, and experience accumulated in previous games, allowing you to slowly progress in rebuilding the world.

In this adventure, humans, harpies, foxes, beavers, and lizards coexist, each bringing their own strengths and demands, from their preferred housing to their tastes in food, luxury, and entertainment. You must decide whether to craft raincoats, brew beers, or bake cakes to keep your inhabitants' morale high in the face of adversity, or favor one species to optimize management and fulfill the Burning Queen's objectives.

The game combines the traditional depth of city builders with the replayability provided by the roguelite format. You'll manage multiple settlements scattered across a vast map, while collecting resources that will allow you to improve the Smoking City and advance in meta-progression. Constant pressure from the Queen and the recurring threat of storms force you to maintain a balance between expansion, survival, and the exploration of different biomes, each with unique challenges.

With hundreds of modifiers and six distinct biomes, each location you choose to found a city will bring unique challenges that will test your skills as a Viceroy. Adapting to changing weather conditions, experimenting with different builds and skills, and deciding whether to venture into the forest to seek rewards or tread cautiously will be crucial decisions for success. Trading with a mysterious merchant and the potential to discover ancient dangers and treasures in the forest add an element of uncertainty and surprise to each game.
