In Against the Storm, you play the Viceroy, a leader appointed by the Burning Queen with the mission of reclaiming wild territories and finding lost treasures for the Smoking City, civilization's last refuge from the devastating Plaguestorm that ravaged the ancient world. Unlike other building and survival games where the focus is on a single city, here you must create an extensive network of settlements spread across a vast map, inhabited by different fantasy races, each with their own unique characteristics and needs.

The wild environment is fraught with constant threats, and perpetual storms test the resilience of your inhabitants. Should any of your settlements fall, the expedition could come to an end, but the game doesn't end, as the game incorporates roguelike elements: resources, upgrades, and experience gained on each attempt are retained for future adventures, making each new trip into the hostile world different and with a deeper purpose.

Among the inhabitants struggling to survive are humans, harpies, foxes, beavers, and lizards, all of whom bring unique abilities that you must harness while managing their varied demands, from shelter and food to their tastes in leisure and luxury. You must decide whether to craft raincoats, brew ale, or bake cakes to maintain morale in the face of adversity, or whether to favor a group to accelerate progress in the name of the Burning Queen.

The core of the game is the management and construction of multiple cities, each facing its own climatic and geographical challenges, while accumulating resources that improve the Smoking City in a process of continuous progression. The Queen's pressure to deliver results and the constant threat of the Plaguestorm make decision-making crucial. Your reputation and skill in managing each settlement will determine how you expand your dominion.

With more than six different biomes and hundreds of modifiers affecting gameplay, each location presents unique challenges that force you to constantly adjust your strategy. You can choose whether to venture deeper into the forest to obtain valuable rewards at the cost of greater risks, or whether to advance cautiously so as not to overstep your capabilities. Meanwhile, a mysterious merchant periodically appears with items that can change the course of your expedition, and the environment holds both ancient treasures and dangers.

The joy of establishing a new city is repeated throughout each playthrough, creating a dynamic experience where each settlement contributes to an expanding world that evolves with every decision you make as Viceroy.
