Wardogs hit 340,171 concurrent players on Steam on its first night in early access, at 00:38 UTC on 11 September. That put BULKHEAD's three-team shooter, published by Team17, second on the whole of Steam, behind only Counter-Strike 2, and it spent launch night as the most-played paid game on the platform. If those numbers have you thinking about jumping in, the Wardogs prices across verified stores are updated live.
Every figure here is our own reading. Roughly every 15 minutes we log the official concurrent player count Steam publishes, and all times below are UTC. Steam refreshes that count about every 13 minutes, so the true high may sit slightly above what we caught, and other stats sites can show a different number.
How many people play Wardogs on Steam?
A lot, and very quickly. At 15:59 UTC on 10 September, just before the game unlocked, we counted 33 players. Eleven minutes later the Wardogs player count stood at 153,917, good for sixth place across all of Steam with FiveM (167,039) and Valheim (154,879) still ahead of it. By 16:25 it had passed both, and it went through 300,000 at 17:40, less than two hours after that first reading.
Here is the curve through launch night. Times are UTC, so take off four hours for New York.
| Time (UTC) | Concurrent players | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Sep, 15:59 | 33 | Just before the game unlocked |
| 10 Sep, 16:10 | 153,917 | Sixth on all of Steam |
| 10 Sep, 16:25 | 244,182 | Most-played paid game, fourth overall |
| 10 Sep, 17:55 | 333,482 | Passes PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS for third overall |
| 10 Sep, 18:10 | 337,157 | First ceiling of the European evening |
| 10 Sep, 19:23 | 239,161 | Sliding as Europe logs off |
| 10 Sep, 21:13 | 247,927 | Climbing again as the Americas come online |
| 11 Sep, 00:08 | 336,853 | Passes Dota 2 for second overall |
| 11 Sep, 00:38 | 340,171 | Measured peak (20:38 on 10 Sep in New York) |
| 11 Sep, 03:38 | 284,479 | Latest reading at the time of writing |
The first wave topped out at 18:10 with 337,157 players, which was just after eight in the evening in central Europe.
The peak arrived with the Americas online
Once Europe started heading to bed, the count dropped below 250,000. It turned back up as players across the Americas logged on, passed 300,000 again by 23:08 UTC (308,281) and kept going. At 00:08 UTC on 11 September Wardogs overtook Dota 2 for second place on Steam, and half an hour later it reached the measured peak of 340,171.
In New York that was 20:38 ET on 10 September; in California, 17:38. Wardogs stayed second overall in every reading from 00:08 to 01:23 UTC, when it still had 335,419 players, and the count then began to ease. Our latest reading before publishing, at 03:38 UTC, showed 284,479 people in the game.
Second on all of Steam, first among paid games
Between 16:25 UTC on 10 September and 03:38 UTC on 11 September, Wardogs was the most-played paid game on Steam in 45 of our 46 readings. The only games above it in that stretch were free-to-play: Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and, for part of the evening, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS. Across the whole store it spent almost all of that time between second and fourth place.
This was the top of Steam at the moment of the peak, 00:38 UTC on 11 September:
| Position | Game | Concurrent players |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Counter-Strike 2 (free-to-play) | 525,264 |
| 2 | Wardogs | 340,171 |
| 3 | Dota 2 (free-to-play) | 321,080 |
| 4 | FiveM | 140,089 |
| 5 | Valheim | 134,513 |
At that point Wardogs had about two and a half times as many players as Valheim in fifth. If you want to see where it sits now, our Steam player radar keeps a live ranking of the most-played games alongside their prices.
How the launch compares with the Playtest
During the Playtest in early September we measured a high of 245,118 concurrent players, on 5 September at 20:51 UTC. The launch peak came in roughly 39% above that.
Our own Steam history only goes back to 13 August, so the comparison only covers a few weeks. In that window How to Fish, also a paid game, went higher than Wardogs, reaching 373,971 on 26 August. Palworld's 333,275 on 16 August sits just below what Wardogs managed on launch night.
Bear in mind what all those people are actually playing. This is an early access build with three maps, each in three variants, and up to 100 players split into three teams fighting over a control zone, with infantry, vehicles, fortifications and proximity voice chat. We went through the rest in what the early access gives you on day one.
Why waiting for a sale works against you here
A busy launch doesn't change how Wardogs is sold. BULKHEAD's CEO, Joe Brammer, has explained that the price goes up in steps as new content arrives, over an early access period the studio expects to last one to two years, and there is no battle pass or microtransactions in the meantime. Holding out for a discount, the way you might with most big releases, doesn't really work with this one.
The live price comparison lists every offer by format: Steam code, gift or account. If you're not sure which to pick, our guide on which edition and format to buy covers the differences, and once you've decided you can buy Wardogs key from the product page.
