Blizzard used BlizzCon on 12 September to announce Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom, and put it on sale the same day. It's the first new Warcraft III campaign in more than 20 years and is sold only on PC, through the Battle.net shop. The patch released alongside it has changed how Reforged itself works, though, and that part has gone down badly with players.
Three chapters with the Forsaken
According to Blizzard, Forsaken Kingdom contains a prologue and three campaign chapters centred on the Forsaken. It adds a new neutral hero, a Forsaken paladin, and tells a story that runs from the fall of Lordaeron to the start of World of Warcraft. To play it you need Reforged, and with the new patch, a connection.
You can buy it on its own or in a Combo pack with the base game. There's also a Warcraft Forever Collection, available for a limited time until 11 January, which includes Reforged and Forsaken Kingdom plus items for World of Warcraft: Forever. We haven't verified Battle.net's prices for any of these, so we won't quote them.
Reforged now needs an internet connection, even for the campaign
With the patch, the Reforged client requires a permanent internet connection. That applies to the single-player campaign too, and LAN play has been removed altogether.
Blizzard gave no explanation for it in the patch notes, and the reaction from players has been negative.
Reforged didn't have much goodwill to spend in the first place. At launch it averaged 60 on OpenCritic from 36 reviews, only 9% of critics recommended it, and the site put it in its "Weak" category. Blizzard later released a large update to fix it.
Offline and LAN still work in the classic client
If you want to play without a connection, or with friends on the same network, the classic Warcraft III client is still the way to do it. It comes included when you buy Reforged and keeps both offline play and LAN.
The original Warcraft III is no longer sold separately, so buying Reforged is now the only way to get the classic version as well.
Buying Reforged today, without the expansion
We'll be upfront: our data here is thin. When we checked on 14 September at around 05:50 UTC, there was exactly one live offer for Reforged. Gamivo has it at €20.69 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€22.40 with fees), as a Battle.net gift, standard edition, global region. Prices can change at any time.
One thing to be clear about: this gift is Warcraft III: Reforged and nothing more. Forsaken Kingdom is not included, and for now the expansion is only sold on Battle.net.
With a single offer there's nothing to compare it against, so our history is the better guide. The median for Reforged keys is €28.74 and the lowest we've recorded is €12.99, on 21 March, both without fees. Gamivo's base price is 28% below that median, and in 314 days of tracking the game has only been cheaper on 49 of them.
So if you don't own Reforged yet and want it for the classic client or ahead of the expansion, today's price is decent by its own standards.
