If you've been playing GTA V through PlayStation Plus, there's a date to note: 17 November. The Japanese PlayStation Store already lists it among the games leaving the Extra and Premium catalogue that day. Sony hasn't published the European or US list yet, but both regions usually follow Japan's dates.
GTA V and six other games on their way out
The Japanese list also includes Red Dead Redemption 2, Football Manager 26, Cricket 24, Thank Goodness You're Here, Rock of Ages 3: Make & Break and The Talos Principle 2, which we covered yesterday in our piece on The Talos Principle 2 leaving PS Plus. Until Sony announces it for Europe, treat 17 November as very likely rather than certain.
What you keep: your save and your GTA Online character
Your story save doesn't vanish with the catalogue. If you buy GTA V, it's the same game on the same account, so you carry on from the mission you were on.
GTA Online works the same way, with one catch. Your character, your properties and the GTA$ you've built up are tied to your Rockstar and PSN accounts, not to the subscription. What you lose on the 17th is the game itself, and without it you can't get into Online. Once you own it again, it's all still there. Bear in mind that online play on PS5 still needs PS Plus, so if GTA Online is all you care about, Essential is enough once you've bought the game.
€19.99 at the PlayStation Store, and it isn't on sale
This morning the PS5 version costs €19.99 (no fees) at the PlayStation Store. That's its regular price, not a discount, and the purchase stays on your account whether you renew PS Plus or not. We haven't tracked how far Sony has cut it in past sales, so we can't tell you whether it will drop before the 17th. If you'd rather wait, set a price alert for GTA V on PS5 and we'll email you if the official price comes down.
Our price history shows a median of €10.98 and a low of €5.01, both without fees. It records the cheapest offer of each day in any format, accounts included, so it tells you nothing about what the official version usually costs.
Every option is on the page to buy Grand Theft Auto V key for PS5.
Accounts from €5.31: what you're actually buying
The cheapest PS5 offers aren't keys. GamesPSN sells an account for €5.31 with the coupon GOCDKEYS16 (no fees), Difmark for €8.53 with Gocdkeys (€8.91 with fees) and Key4Games for €10.11 with GOCDKEYS15 (€10.82 with fees).
An account is the login for someone else's PSN account that already owns the game. You sign in with it on your console and play, but the licence stays in their name. Depending on how the seller sets it up, you either play on their profile or on your own, borrowing their licence.
Why GTA Online is worth buying in your own name
To finish the story, an account at about a quarter of the official price can make sense if you accept the risk. GTA Online is another matter. On the seller's profile, your character and your money sit on an account you don't control. On your own profile the progress is yours but the game isn't: if the seller changes the password or Sony closes that account, you're locked out of Online until you buy the game. Any GTA$ you pay for in the meantime is only useful while that borrowed licence keeps working.
There's almost €15 between the cheapest account and the PlayStation Store. If you play Online regularly, we'd buy it from Sony.
Red Dead Redemption 2 leaves on the same day
Red Dead Redemption 2 goes on the same day. On PlayStation it's the PS4 version, which runs on PS5, and this morning the PlayStation Store has it at €14.99 (no fees) instead of €59.99, an offer that ends on the night of 21 October. The cheapest account is at Difmark, €10.07 with Gocdkeys (€10.52 with fees). With less than €5 in it, we'd take the official one. It's all on the Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4 page.
If you care about your Online character, the €19.99 at the PlayStation Store is the purchase that keeps both your save and your character in your hands. If all you had left was the end of the story, an account is cheaper, as long as you're fine with the game not being yours.
Prices checked on the morning of 21 October.
