Before looking at any offer, one thing needs clearing up: Grim Dawn: Fangs of Asterkarn is not a game. It is an expansion, and like every Grim Dawn expansion it plugs into a copy that already exists. Buy the code without owning the base game and you end up with a library entry that opens nothing.
Without the base game there is nothing to open
This is the most expensive mistake made with this product, and it is easy to make because the listing shows it with its own price, its own page and its own format, exactly like a full game. Check first that you own Grim Dawn on the same account and the same storefront where you intend to redeem the expansion. That detail comes back further down, because it is not obvious.
Two masteries, and that is the whole game
Grim Dawn does not ask you to pick a class: it asks you to pick two. You start with one mastery and add a second as you progress, and the combination is your character. This is not cosmetic: each pair opens different skills and modifiers, and the gap between two combinations is wider than the gap between two classes in a conventional action RPG. It is also why an expansion that adds mastery options multiplies builds rather than adding just one.
Devotion is the second tree, and almost nobody explains it
Above the masteries sits a constellation map unlocked by cleansing shrines scattered through the world. Each constellation grants passive bonuses and, in some cases, an effect that fires by itself once a condition is met. The point is that Devotion is independent of your two masteries, so two characters identical on paper can play very differently depending on which constellations they took. If you come from another action RPG, this is the system you will have to learn from scratch.
What happens to the save I already had going?
Expansion content does not force a restart. It is woven into the existing world, so an advanced character can reach the new material once they arrive at the area or meet the relevant requirement, and any added customisation options become available to characters you already have. Starting over is your decision, not a requirement.
Steam and GOG do not share a library
Offers for Steam and offers from GOG sit side by side in the listing, and they are separate libraries. A GOG expansion does not activate on a Steam copy of Grim Dawn or the other way round: same content, but it has to live in the same house as the base game. There are also lines marked Steam Account, which are not your purchase but access to someone else’s account that already holds the material; usually the cheapest line, and also the one least like a normal purchase.
| Label | What you receive | Where it ends up |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (Steam) | A key you redeem yourself. | Your Steam library. |
| Standard (GOG) | A key you redeem yourself, DRM-free. | Your GOG library. |
| Steam Account | Access to another person account. | Nowhere that is yours. |
The live listing, coupon already applied
The figures include each seller coupon, which is why the order may not match the store own page. The historical run is on the Grim Dawn: Fangs of Asterkarn price page.
What to check before adding it to the library
Three things, in this order: that you own the base game, that the offer storefront is the one you own it on, and what the format label says. With that settled you can buy Grim Dawn: Fangs of Asterkarn key with no surprises at redemption.
