Gray Zone Warfare's 0.5 update, Rogue Ops, is out. MADFINGER Games had it down for 22 October, and with it the game moves from pre-alpha to alpha. It's still in Early Access on Steam, PC only. The studio presents Rogue Ops as the second of the three big gameplay loops it has planned.
If you've been waiting for a reason to start, or to come back, this is the biggest one so far: a base of your own, a way to make money that runs outside the usual faction work, and a wipe that leaves your progress alone.
Your hideout, and what you make in it
Rogue Ops gives you a hideout. The centrepiece is a chemistry lab for making drugs, and what you cook matters. Morphine goes to the clinics, heroin goes out for distribution, and whichever way you lean shifts your reputation with the factions.
Next to it sits a Micro Lab, where you break down the tech and relics you salvage in the field. You can use what comes out or sell it on the black market.
Crafting also gives you hacking tools. They're your way into parts of the map that are locked right now.
Getting the drugs off the island
Cooking is only half the job. Once you try to move the product off the island, Banshee comes after you, because Banshee hunts whoever is carrying the drugs. You can also switch sides, take work from Banshee and go after the smugglers yourself.
There's more ground to cover, too. Three new locations open up: Radio Observatory, Asylum and Military Research Site. And you can now create more than one character.
What the soft wipe takes, and what it leaves
The update comes with a soft wipe. You lose your money and your gear, but your progress stays. It's the first major update that doesn't reset progress, so if you put serious hours in before, they still count.
New players won't notice any of this.
What it costs today, and whether to wait
On Steam the game costs €25.99 (no fees). We counted 39 offers in stock this morning, and the cheapest keys were these:
- Gameseal, Steam Key: €18.65 with coupon SEAL17CKD (€20.97 with fees)
- Difmark Digital Keys, Steam Key: €20.40 with the Gocdkeys coupon (€21.32 with fees)
- K4G, Steam Key: €19.61 with GCDK14DEAL (€21.68 with fees)
- Instant Gaming, Steam Key: €22.49 (no fees)
The Gameseal key saves you about €5 over Steam. K4G starts below Difmark, but its fees push it above. You'll also spot a Steam account at Kinguin for €11.43 with OCTGOC10 (€12.69 with fees). That isn't a key. You get the login to someone else's Steam account that already owns the game, so it never ends up in your own library. For a game you'll be playing through Early Access, we'd go for the key.
If you want the Elite edition, Instant Gaming has its Steam Key at €54.89 (no fees).
Now the less flattering part. In the 473 days we've been tracking this key, its median has been €16.59 and its lowest €8.92 (historical figures don't include fees). Today it's around 12% above its usual level, and it's been cheaper than this on 468 of those days. On Steam the game is rated Mostly Positive, with 50,399 positive reviews out of 69,998 (72%).
If you want to be in the alpha this week, the key is the cheapest way in: you can buy Gray Zone Warfare key from its page. If you're not in a hurry, set a price alert and wait for it to drop back to where it usually sits.
Prices checked on the morning of 26 October.
