Fable now has a date: Playground Games' reboot, published by Xbox Game Studios, launches on 23 February, and you can already preorder it. On Steam the Standard Edition costs €69.99 (no fees), Steam Key, and nobody in our comparison sells that edition for less this morning.
Release date, platforms and what you need on PC
The official Xbox site lists the game for Xbox Series X|S and PC, both through Windows and on Steam, and says it will be in Game Pass from day one. Bought on Xbox, it is Play Anywhere: one purchase covers console and PC. The Steam page asks for Windows 10 and 135 GB of free space, so clear some room before launch.
On the combat side, associate game director Will Kennedy has described a system called style-weaving, which lets you mix melee, ranged weapons and magic in the same fight.
Standard or Premium: what the extra €30 buys
The Premium Edition is €99.99 (no fees), Steam Key, on Steam. Its most concrete perk is early access: you can play from 18 February, five days before everyone else. According to Xbox it also includes the Fable Premium Edition Content Pack, the Fable: Order of the Hero expansion, which arrives after launch, and a digital artbook and soundtrack. If you start with the Standard Edition or play through Game Pass, Xbox also sells a Premium Upgrade that adds the same extras later.
The preorder bonus is cosmetic
Every preorder, whichever edition, comes with the Pre-Order Content Pack: a Chicken Suit plus a few in-game gifts (a bouquet of wildflowers, a toy chicken and a picnic basket with scones and jam). It is one per account and only available until launch. Nice to have, but nothing that should rush the decision.
The two offers we track today
Our page has just two offers. The Standard on Steam at €69.99 (no fees), Steam Key, is the cheapest.
The other is at Kinguin: €82.22 with coupon OCTGOC10 (€89.11 with fees), Windows Store Key. The listing is named as the Premium Edition for Xbox Series X|S and PC, which would make it about €11 cheaper than Steam's Premium. Keep in mind that it is redeemed on a Microsoft account, not on Steam, so check the description before you pay.
No discount since the end of June
Our history starts on 30 June and its figures are without fees or coupons. In all that time the lowest price has been €69.99 (no fees), Steam Key, always on Steam. The game has never been cheaper with us, which is normal for a big release still months away.
Preorder now or wait?
If you have Game Pass, there is little reason to buy: it is included on launch day. For everyone else, preordering today saves you nothing, the Chicken Suit is purely cosmetic, and the early access costs €30 more for five days. With no deadline other than the bonus, the sensible move is to wait and set a price alert, so you hear about it if a store goes below the €69.99 (no fees) of the Steam Key on Steam before 23 February. The Premium is worth it if you know you will play the expansion. You can compare every offer on the page to buy Fable key.
