Amazon has kicked off November on Prime Gaming with two PC games, Squirrel with a Gun and WRC Generations. They are the first of seven free games coming over the month. If you already pay for Amazon Prime, the squirrel costs you nothing extra. What you need to know before claiming it is where it ends up: Prime Gaming gives you a copy for the Amazon Games App, so it won't show up in your Steam library.
A squirrel, a gun and a quiet suburb
Squirrel with a Gun is a third-person action sandbox. You play a squirrel that finds some firearms and starts shooting up a residential neighbourhood, with exaggerated physics, government agents chasing you and golden acorns to collect. It's short, it's silly and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. Steam reviews are "Very Positive": 2,717 of 3,159 are positive, or 86%.
How to claim it through Prime
- Sign in to Prime Gaming (or Amazon Luna) with your Prime account and claim the game.
- Install the Amazon Games App, which is a Windows program.
- Download and install Squirrel with a Gun from there.
Once claimed, the game is yours to keep even if you cancel Prime later. We don't know the last day to claim it, so check the date on the Prime Gaming page. WRC Generations is handled differently: it comes as an Epic Games Store key, and you'll have to link your Epic account.
Who should just take the Prime copy
If you pay for Prime anyway, play on Windows and don't mind one more launcher, claim it and you're done.
The Steam version is for everyone else. Maybe you want it in Steam next to the rest of your games, or you don't have Prime at all. And if your PC doesn't run Windows, the Amazon app is no use to you.
What it costs on Steam and in other stores
The Steam store sells it for €19.50 (no fees). Key shops are far cheaper: this morning we counted 34 PC offers in stock across 20 stores, and the cheapest was G2A at €1.23 (€1.52 with fees), Steam Key for the Europe region.
To redeem it, open Steam, go to Games > Activate a Product on Steam and paste the code. From then on it sits in your library like any other game.
It has been cheaper before
At around a euro and a half with fees, there isn't much to think about. Still, it has been cheaper. In July and August keys sold for €0.29 to €0.33 at Kinguin (no fees or coupons, like all our price history figures) and for €0.33 to €0.48 at Eneba (no fees), and in October Eneba had it at €0.61 (no fees). If you're not in a hurry, set a price alert and we'll email you when it drops. If you want it now, every offer to buy Squirrel with a Gun key is on the game page. We also track prices for the PS5 and Xbox versions.
Prices checked on the morning of 7 November.
