Sudden Strike 5: France – Road to Liberation transports players to August 1944, revisiting the pivotal Operation Dragoon campaign in Southern France. This real-time tactics expansion delivers six historically inspired missions that place commanders on both sides of the conflict. Allied players storm Camel Beach, fight inland toward Toulon's liberation, and capture Hill 300 to sever German escape routes. Axis commanders face the opposite challenge: holding collapsing defensive lines while orchestrating desperate withdrawals under mounting pressure.

The expansion maintains Sudden Strike 5's core gameplay loop of commanding over 300 authentic WWII units across sprawling maps. Players select their own tactics, unit compositions, and objectives to complete mission goals, capturing strategic locations like Field HQs and Supply Depots to gain reinforcements while managing supplies and positioning. The real-time tactical layer rewards both aggressive maneuvering and defensive positioning, with opportunities for reconnaissance, sabotage, and alternative routing to outmaneuver opponents.

France: Road to Liberation introduces the new French Commander Jean de Lattre de Tassigny, whose mobility-focused playstyle emphasizes seizing opportunities and maintaining engagement control. Two new doctrine cards—Maquis Mobilization and Crew Vehicle Training—expand strategic options for force deployment and battlefield adaptation. The DLC adds over six new unit types, including the USS Edison destroyer, the German SdKfz 302 Goliath remote demolition vehicle, French infantry, and amphibious units, broadening tactical possibilities across both factions.

This content is designed for players seeking deep tactical gameplay grounded in historical settings. The dual-perspective campaign structure—playing both liberators and defenders—provides narrative variety while maintaining mechanical consistency. Fans of real-time strategy, WWII history, and complex unit management will find substantial content in these six missions, which integrate seamlessly with Sudden Strike 5's existing mechanics and progression systems.
