Simpler Times is a contemplative exploration game that invites players to step into the life of Taina as she prepares to leave her childhood home for college. Set entirely within her bedroom, the game unfolds across four distinct seasons spanning ten years, with each season representing a pivotal moment in her journey from childhood to young adulthood. Through careful observation and patient interaction with objects around the room—photographs, books, records, and personal mementos—players gradually uncover the memories and emotions that have shaped Taina's life.

The core gameplay loop centers on exploration and discovery without pressure or failure states. Players interact with various items and activities: listening to music on a record player, painting, watching nature through the window, taking photographs, browsing books, reading handwritten notes, and solving gentle puzzles. The record player serves as the narrative gateway, with each vinyl record triggering a shift to a different season and revealing new layers of Taina's story. Side activities like painting or building a birdhouse carry over between seasons, creating a sense of continuity and personal investment.

Music forms the soulful centerpiece of the experience. Composed by George Pandrea in a lo-fi chillout style and accompanied by voice acting from Maeve Kroeger, the soundtrack becomes integral to both atmosphere and storytelling. Players physically manipulate records—removing them, selecting new ones, positioning the needle—creating a meditative ritual that mirrors the reflective tone of the entire game.

What distinguishes Simpler Times is its commitment to a pressure-free, introspective experience. There are no timers, no fail states, no combat, and no anxiety-inducing mechanics. Instead, the game rewards patience and attention to detail, allowing players to move at their own pace and discover meaning through personal connection to Taina's world. The narrative unfolds subtly through observation and introspection rather than exposition, making the experience deeply personal and open to individual interpretation.

This game appeals to players seeking emotional, story-driven experiences similar to Gone Home or Unpacking, as well as those drawn to cozy, meditative gaming. It's designed for anyone who appreciates thoughtful reflection on life transitions, nostalgia, and the significance of everyday objects in shaping who we become.
