Wild West Pioneers goes on sale today, Friday 25 September, in early access on PC. It unlocks at 13:00 BST (14:00 CEST, 8:00 EDT, 5:00 PDT) on Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store at the same time. It's a city builder set in the Wild West, made by EmpireCraft Studios and published by Toplitz Productions.
Steam still wasn't showing a price this morning. It will publish one when sales open. Keys are already out there, though, and the cheapest is at Driffle: €12.30 with coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€13.14 with fees), Steam Key.
What kind of game is it?
You lead a group of pioneers out west and found settlements across several regions, each with its own resources. Town hall first, then roads, houses and a saloon. After that it's all about production chains for food, building materials, tools and luxury goods, from timber right up to gold. Keep your settlers happy. If you don't, they pack up and leave.
You can place buildings and roads wherever you like, and decorations do more than look nice: they fulfil specific wishes your settlers have.
There's a story running alongside the building. You're searching for your father, who headed west and never came back. Some of your decisions have consequences, and the dialogue is voiced by real actors. The map opens up as you send out Scouts, who find new places, treasure, people who need help and traders to do business with.
First impressions so far
Steam files it under simulation and strategy. First impressions from the press compare it to Anno set in the West of Red Dead Redemption.
They also point out the kind of interface rough edges you'd expect from early access. Some production chains, for example, come with no explanation of how they work.
There are no player reviews on Steam yet, since it only launches today. One more detail: the studio removed every AI-generated asset before early access began.
What's still to come
Early access is expected to last about a year. The roadmap on the Steam page lists what's planned for the full release: random events, new means of transport and more advanced buildings.
What it costs today

There's nothing to compare against on Steam yet. Toplitz has said the early access price is lower than what the 1.0 will cost, but hasn't given a figure.

Buy now or wait for the 1.0?
If you enjoy city builders and don't mind playing something unfinished, a key at around €13 is your way in.
Prefer to play the finished version? Waiting makes sense too. Just remember that, according to the publisher, the 1.0 will cost more than early access does now.
