Proper hunting simulation: tracks, wind and ballistics
The strict end of the genre. Long walks, footprints, wind direction, and shots you can miss.
theHunter: Call of the Wild is the backbone of all of it: enormous reserves, blood trails you follow on foot, animals that hear you before you see them. Steam sits at Very Positive with 151,126 positives out of 169,805 reviews, which is a sample nobody can argue with. Worth knowing before you spend: Expansive Worlds sells the base game cheap and charges for the ground you hunt on, so the maps are paid DLC. That is the business model, not a footnote. Way of the Hunter is the one for people who care about ballistics. Nine Rocks Games models the bullet trajectory and what happens at the point of impact, so a bad angle is a bad angle and the game says so. Very Positive, 6,884 of 8,499 reviews. There are more than forty offers across a good twenty stores, Steam Key from € (with coupon AUGGOC10), and an Elite Ed. from €7.06.
Virtual Hunter is the small Finnish one, from Korpi Games. Read the sample before the label: Mostly Positive here means 124 positives out of 172 reviews in total. That is an early impression rather than a verdict, and it deserves a moment of caution. Eight offers across six stores, every one of them a Steam Key, from € (with coupon AUGGOC10).
Hunting monsters: Capcom, Koei Tecmo and Bandai Namco
Monster Hunter Wilds is the big one, and the one with the messiest page. The lowest number on it, €11.29, is a Steam Account, not a licence of your own; the first actual Steam Key starts at €. Capcom has 103,879 positives out of 199,767 reviews, a Mixed verdict driven mostly by PC performance rather than by the hunting itself. There are 129 offers from 22 stores, so the page moves a lot.
Two Capcom entries here are expansions and will not run on their own. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne needs Monster Hunter: World installed first; Mixed, 10,184 of 17,866, and 70 offers across 19 stores, Steam Key from € (with coupon GOCDKEYS10). Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak needs Rise; Mixed, 3,072 of 4,800, 96 offers from 21 stores, Steam Key at € (with coupon GOCDKEYS10) with a Deluxe Ed. from €4.49. Yes: twelve cents more for the Deluxe. Check both before you pick one.
WILD HEARTS from Koei Tecmo is a case where quoting one price would be dishonest. The cheapest thing on the page is a Steam Gift at €5.49 from Itemku. Then nothing for twelve euros, until the first EA App Key at €17.98 and the cheapest Steam Key at €. Three formats, three ways of landing in your library, so read the label before you read the number. Steam is Mixed, 5,098 of 10,621, and the page carries 23 offers from 10 stores.
Bandai Namco's two hold up better than their age suggests. GOD EATER 3 is Very Positive with 6,177 of 7,721 reviews, 31 offers across 14 stores, Steam Key from € (with coupon GCDKGamivo). GOD EATER 2 Rage Burst is Very Positive too, 2,805 of 3,506, with 21 offers from 15 stores, Steam Key from € (with coupon GCDKGamivo).
When the prey is another player, or is you
Hunt: Showdown 1896 is Crytek's extraction shooter in the Louisiana swamps, and sound is a mechanic rather than decoration: horses, crows and chains give you away before anyone sees you. Mostly Positive, 157,018 of 212,186 reviews. The page holds 36 offers from 15 stores, Steam Key from € (with coupon SEAL17CDK), a Deluxe Ed. from €18.57 and a Starter Edition from €13.17 — which is dearer than the plain Steam Key, so read the edition name twice. The Isle is Very Positive with 88,053 of 110,066 reviews, and Afterthought LLC has built a reputation there. Its page is another story: twelve offers from six stores, and eleven of them are Steam Gift starting at €17.78. The only key on the page is the one Valve sells itself, at €.
Death in the Water 2 flips the role. You dive, sharks hunt you, and Lighthouse Games Studio keeps it short. Very Positive, 1,432 of 1,725, ten offers across six stores, all of them Steam Key, from € (with coupon GCDK14DEAL).
The Axis Unseen has you tracking creatures out of folklore with a metal soundtrack running underneath. Mostly Positive, but again a short sample: 233 positives out of 306. The cheapest thing on the page, €0.70, is a Steam Account; the Steam Key is € (with coupon GOCDKEYS10), across 24 offers and 12 stores.
Witch Hunt puts you in a seventeenth-century forest with a musket and a lantern, and studio Gua has 2,010 positives out of 2,284 reviews for it. The page is tiny: four offers from three stores. The cheapest is a Steam Gift at €9.70, five cents under the Steam Key that Valve sells at €.
Open worlds where hunting is half the game
Far Cry Primal is the one where hunting is not a side activity: Ubisoft built the whole loop around it, and you eat what you kill. Very Positive, 33,220 of 38,628 reviews. There are 25 offers across 14 stores, Steam Key from € (with coupon GCDKGamivo), a Windows Store Key at €4.61 and a Uplay Key from €4.79.
Far Cry 5 keeps hunting as an economy rather than as the plot. Ubisoft Montreal, Very Positive with 139,736 of 172,514 reviews, 28 offers from 13 stores. Every cheap route here is a Uplay Key rather than a Steam one, from € (with coupon GCDKGamivo), with a Gold Ed. at €11.19.
Ten of them cost under five euros

Read this before you pay: expansions and accounts
Two more things that catch people out. theHunter: Call of the Wild is cheap on purpose and the reserves are sold separately, so budget for the maps you actually want rather than for the base game. And on WILD HEARTS the Steam Gift at €5.49, the EA App Key at €17.98 and the Steam Key are not the same purchase, whatever the sorted prices suggest at first glance.
Everything quoted here is today's figure. Our own price history goes back fourteen years and the one lesson from it is that the number you saw last week is rarely the number you pay.
Which one to start with, depending on what you want
If you want the real thing, tracking and all, start with theHunter: Call of the Wild at € (with coupon SEAL17CDK) and add one reserve later; it is the safest first purchase of the sixteen and you can watch its history on the theHunter: Call of the Wild price page. If shot placement is what you enjoy, Way of the Hunter is the better simulator of the two.
For monsters, GOD EATER 3 at € (with coupon GCDKGamivo) asks the least of your wallet and of your PC. Monster Hunter Wilds is the one to want, but check the licence price rather than the headline number and read the performance complaints first. If you already own World or Rise, the expansions are the cheapest hours on this whole page.
For hunting people, Hunt: Showdown, and buy the plain Steam Key: the Starter Edition costs more and gives you less. And if you want the strangest fifty minutes on the list, The Axis Unseen at € (with coupon GOCDKEYS10) is worth it for the soundtrack alone.
