Nidhogg's update adds a minigame for matchmaking waits: the original or Nidhogg 2?

On 17 October Messhof announced an update for the first Nidhogg on Steam, the original rather than the sequel. The headline addition is a small game to keep you busy while online matchmaking looks for an opponent. That brings back an old question for anyone who wants a fencing game for friends: the original or Nidhogg 2? This morning the sequel costs €1.21 with fees, about a fifth of what the original goes for.

The Waiting Game and the rest of the update

Here's what Messhof has announced for Nidhogg:

  • The Waiting Game: while the online mode searches for a rival, you run, jumping or ducking to dodge obstacles.
  • A worldwide leaderboard for that minigame.
  • Steam voice chat in online multiplayer.
  • Reorganised menus, tweaked controls and bug fixes.

None of this is coming to Nidhogg 2, at least not in this announcement.

Same duel, two very different looks

If you've never played it: two players, one sword each, and a single hit kills. Whoever lands it gets to run towards the other player's end of the map, while the rival respawns in front of them to block the way. Reach the end and a giant worm, the Nidhogg, swallows you whole, which in this game counts as winning. Rounds last a minute or two and the trash talk on the sofa starts in the first one.

Nidhogg 2 keeps the idea but swaps the minimalist pixels of the first game for a much more grotesque art style, and gives you more than a rapier: daggers, a bow, a broadsword. That makes duels more chaotic and less about reading where your opponent is holding the blade. Both are by Messhof, who also publishes them. Steam players rate the original Very Positive, 90% of 5,754 reviews; Nidhogg 2 is also Very Positive, with 81% of 1,030.

Nidhogg 2 for little more than a euro

The sequel has never been this cheap on Gocdkeys. Kinguin sells the Steam Key for €0.80 with the coupon OCTGOC10 (€1.21 with fees), HRKGame for €0.82 with Gocdkeys12 (€1.22 with fees) and Key4Games for €1.18 (€1.48 with fees). If you'd rather avoid payment fees, Instant Gaming has it for €1.59 (no fees). Steam charges €14.79 (no fees).

For context, the lowest price we had recorded before today was €2.00 and the median is €10.28, both without fees.

The original at €5.80, its usual price

Nidhogg isn't on sale. The cheapest Steam Key is at Gameseal, €5.02 with SEAL17CKD (€5.80 with fees). Kinguin has a Steam Gift for €5.31 with OCTGOC10 (€6.08 with fees). A gift is not a key: instead of a code you redeem, the seller sends the game to your Steam account and you accept it there. Gamivo has the key for €5.64 with GCDKGamivo (€6.83 with fees), and Steam asks €9.75 (no fees).

That's roughly what it usually costs: the median in our price history is €5.50 and its lowest recorded price is €2.08, both without fees. The page to buy Nidhogg key has every offer, and if you can wait, set a price alert for Nidhogg and we'll email you when it drops.

Our pick: if you play on the sofa with a second controller, get Nidhogg 2 now, at that price there's little to think about. If what you want is online duels with the new waiting minigame and voice chat, those only exist in the original, and €5.80 with fees is a fair price for it. With both, you're paying around €7.

Prices checked on the morning of 21 October.
