Outward 2 finally has a date. Nine Dots Studio will release it in early access on 8 February next year, on PC only, through Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG. No console version has been announced. The date was revealed on 8 October at the Triple-i Initiative. The plan used to be July this year, but the studio pushed it back to work on stability after hearing from players in an open beta.

If February feels a long way off, the first game has rarely been cheaper. This morning Outward costs €1.99 on Steam (no fees), down from its usual €39.99.

What the early access version includes

Three open-world regions, and three different starts, each in its own city with three questlines of its own. Six trainers will teach you combat techniques if you pay them in silver. The new Exercise system levels up passive skills according to how you actually play: the material of your armour, the type of weapon you use and how heavy your gear is.

Co-op is there from day one, split-screen or online. As in the first game, you have to drop your backpack before a fight. New this time is a pack mule that carries extra weight for you. Keep an eye on it, though, because enemies and the environment can kill it.

Twelve to 18 months before version 1.0

That is how long early access is expected to run, and the studio says it will get there without crunch. The 1.0 release is due to add the complete stories, full voice acting, bigger dungeons and more bosses. The publisher is Nine Dots Publishing. On price, all we know is that the early access version will cost less than the finished one. No figure has been given.

The first Outward: Steam is cheaper than the resellers

Resellers usually undercut Steam. Not today. The cheapest reseller deal is a Steam Key for the Definitive Edition at Gameseal (Europe region), €1.72 with coupon SEAL17CKD, which comes to €2.25 with fees. Driffle is next at €2.15 with GOCDKEYS10 (€2.63 with fees). Steam itself charges €1.99, no fees.

That leaves 26 cents between Steam and Gameseal, and what you get for it matters more than the price. The Definitive Edition keys sold by resellers include both expansions, The Soroboreans and The Three Brothers. Our data does not make it clear which edition Steam is selling for €1.99, so check the store page before you pay. If it turns out to be the base game alone, the Definitive Edition gets you the expansions for 26 cents more. If they are included, Steam is the cheapest way in.

The lowest Steam price we have recorded

Our Steam prices for Outward go back to late April. Until now the lowest was €4.79, during the June and July sales, so today's price is well under half of that. We don't know how long the discount will last.

Usual price€39.99
Previous low (June and July sales)€4.79
This morning€1.99

What do Steam players think of it?

17,782 of its 24,697 Steam reviews are positive, 72%, which gives it a "Mostly Positive" rating. Outward is a demanding survival RPG that expects you to plan ahead. At this price, it is a cheap way to find out whether the series suits you before the sequel arrives.

Every store and format, fees included, is on the page to buy Outward key.

Prices checked on the morning of 12 October.
