Truxton Extreme pits humanity against an invasive alien force called Geranium in a desperate struggle for survival. Three protagonists—Ash, Bergamot, and Cyrilla—undergo cybernetic procedures to pilot advanced spacecraft in this battle. As a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up, you pilot the Super Fighter spacecraft through waves of enemy fleets, dodging dense bullet patterns, collecting power-ups, and fighting enormous alien bosses. Power-ups include 'P' icons to increase firepower and 'S' icons to boost your ship's maximum speed, which you can fine-tune with a button press. Every weapon can be temporarily overpowered by draining a gauge, turning enemies into score-boosting tokens while increasing firepower to churn through entire waves of foes. The game consists of eight stages playable in Arcade Mode (hard difficulty without continues) or Story Mode (normal difficulty with checkpoint progression). The story is presented in comic-style format illustrated by Junya Inoue. Truxton Extreme maintains a blisteringly fast pace with eye-wateringly high amounts of incoming damage and lengthy stages littered with punishing enemy encounters, requiring memorization through waves of enemies with sparse checkpoints. The series is known for its high difficulty requiring quick reflexes, unique checkpoint system allowing players to potentially recover upgrades upon death, and a variety of unique weapons. The game supports local 2-player co-op gameplay. Additional modes include Heart Stopper Mode alongside Story and Arcade.
