The Mermaid Mask is an indie point-and-click mystery/adventure game and the fourth installment in the Detective Grimoire Series. Detective Grimoire and his partner Sally Spears investigate the murder of Magnus Mortuga, called to the abandoned fishing town of Silkwirm-On-Sea by the Mortuga Submarine's current captain, Captain Seafoam. Captain Magnus Mortuga has been discovered dead inside his own vessel after reportedly suffering a single fatal wound, yet the room was locked and no murder weapon can be found.

The game is a point-and-click adventure that can be completed through the use of a mouse/trackpad, touchscreen or controllers, where the player assumes the role of Grimoire and Sally as they interact with the eccentric crew of the Mortuga Submarine, collect clues while investigating the various rooms of the submarine, and complete puzzles to reveal new pieces of evidence or advance through the plot. The mechanics of the clue system have been greatly expanded upon with the implementation of 3D models, allowing for the player to thoroughly inspect each clue by toggling them and reveal hidden details about them, including being able to shake and toggle changes with certain clues, and certain clues can even be opened and closed to uncover more information.

The big mechanical change is that clues are now full 3D objects—you pick something up, rotate it, poke around, and the hidden detail sits somewhere on the model instead of hiding behind a flat sprite and a description box, which means examination slows down and starts to matter. The game features a fully voiced cast in English audio only, and an original score from the Budapest Art Orchestra.

The Mermaid Mask is longer, deeper, and more ambitious than any of SFB Games' previous Grimoire games. The game is an enjoyable detective adventure that shines thanks to its memorable characters, engaging murder mystery, and the entertaining chemistry between Grimoire and Sally, though its low difficulty and predictable finale may leave seasoned sleuths wanting more, with minor technical and audio issues occasionally disrupting the experience.
