Set in 1985 Oregon, The Kharzov Effect is a first-person horror puzzle game that casts you as Chris Hutchins, a boy searching for his recently abducted friend Billy. Your friend has vanished into Professor Kharzov's fog-filled estate, and it falls to you to navigate the grounds, solve the mystery, and rescue him alive. The game eschews traditional jump-scares in favor of cerebral challenge and atmospheric tension.

Gameplay centers on exploration and environmental puzzle-solving without weapons. You navigate the estate's interconnected spaces using only your wits, patience, and the shadows to avoid detection. Monsters with distinct sensory capabilities—some see you, some hear you, some feel you—create a dynamic threat that transforms survival into a puzzle itself. Escape-room-style environmental puzzles are woven throughout; every locked door and sealed room contains an answer hidden in the world around you, with no hand-holding or waypoints to guide you.

The design philosophy blends narrative mysteries with contextual and artifact-based puzzles that demand you use most of your senses. Chris's internal thoughts provide subtle guidance, while breadcrumbs left by other characters offer objectives to complete. The game's mechanics reward curiosity and observation over reflexes, creating a suspense-filled experience where you must juggle cerebral problem-solving while watching your back.

Developed by Doorway Studios—a three-person indie team from Eagle, Idaho—The Kharzov Effect is Chapter 1 of a planned multi-chapter series. The game features period-accurate 1985 atmosphere with original music, and launches with 10 language localizations. This is a title for players who value mystery, atmospheric tension, and puzzle design over action-oriented horror.
