You awaken as a living house—a monstrous structure of pipes, tunnels, and cavernous organs. Within your walls dwell shapeless haunts, creatures born from your own body, harboring ancient resentment for crimes committed eons ago. The House Before is a narrative-driven body horror adventure that explores the terror of being trapped inside your own form, blending existential dread with surreal, grotesque imagery.

Gameplay centers on exploration and storytelling rather than action. You navigate the intricate wounds etched into your structure, uncovering the wreckages of history while managing your relationship with the creatures inhabiting you. The experience blends visual novel elements with adventure mechanics and simple mini-games, creating a contemplative, poetic horror atmosphere. The journey takes approximately two hours and follows a mostly linear path, prioritizing narrative coherence over branching complexity.

What sets The House Before apart is its conceptual boldness: few games ask you to inhabit an architectural entity or explore body horror through the lens of a sentient building. The title avoids jump scares and fast-paced action, instead favoring psychological depth and atmospheric immersion. Your choices matter—you can attempt to be a good house, heal old wounds, and ultimately procreate to become something better than what came before, giving your monstrous existence a strange sense of purpose.

This title appeals to players seeking original, thought-provoking narratives with a distinctly eldritch sensibility. It's ideal for those who appreciate experimental indie games, psychological horror without gore-focused spectacle, and stories that linger in the mind. If you're drawn to surreal worlds, poetic dread, and games that challenge conventional game design, The House Before offers a singular, unforgettable experience.
