River City Saga: Journey to the West reimagines the classic Chinese novel through the lens of the beloved River City series, casting Kunio as all four legendary pilgrims—Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and Tang Sanzang—as they embark on a chaotic quest to retrieve Buddhist scriptures from distant Tianzhu. Set during the turbulent Tang Dynasty, where demons run rampant and salvation seems impossible, the Buddha establishes the "Journey to Fetch the Scriptures," and the monkey king Sun Wukong emerges from his 500-year seal to join the pilgrimage and atone for his sins.

The game fuses side-scrolling beat 'em up combat with roguelike progression, creating a loop where each run features procedurally generated layouts, enemies, and power-ups. You clear stages by bashing waves of foes, defeat bosses tied to the mythology, and return to a hub to spend rewards on permanent upgrades before diving back in. Every attempt contributes to long-term progress, encouraging repeated playthroughs even after failure.

Combat centers on three distinct fighting styles: Sun Wukong's speed-focused staff strikes, Zhu Bajie's heavy power attacks, and Sha Wujing's long-range strikes. As you progress through stages, gods randomly grant Secret Skills—over 80 unique abilities that fundamentally reshape your playstyle and stats. The skill enhancement system lets you freely boost attributes using resources earned during runs, allowing you to craft wildly different builds and discover your ultimate combination.

What sets Journey to the West apart is its commitment to River City's comedic identity without sacrificing the roguelike structure. Familiar characters from the series appear as Journey to the West figures, sometimes aiding your crew and other times confronting you as bosses, complete with hilarious banter that rewards series familiarity. The pixel art remains exceptional, with expressive animations and vibrant combat effects that capture the series' playful tone while depicting ancient temples, mystical landscapes, and demon-filled battlegrounds.

Designed for solo play, this title appeals to action roguelike fans seeking satisfying, intuitive combat mechanics and those who appreciate the River City franchise's irreverent humor. While the narrative takes a backseat to gameplay, the core loop of battling enemies, acquiring upgrades, and pushing deeper into the adventure creates an addictive rhythm that keeps momentum high. The game can be completed in roughly an hour per run, but multiple endings and post-game secrets reward dedicated players.
