Proverbs is a meditative puzzle experience that combines the logic of Minesweeper with the visual satisfaction of Picross. At its core lies a single colossal grid containing over 54,000 tiles, divided into oddly-shaped regions that gradually reveal a pixel-art recreation of Peter Bruegel the Elder's 1559 painting "Netherlandish Proverbs." Each completed section unveils one of over 100 illustrations of 16th-century Dutch proverbs and idioms, many still relevant today.

The gameplay loop is straightforward but deeply engaging. Numbered clues (0-9) indicate how many light tiles must be placed within one square of each clue, similar to Minesweeper logic. Players work methodically through regions, solving one constraint-based puzzle after another. The game encourages a relaxed pace—designed to complement podcasts, music, or background listening rather than demand constant attention.

What sets Proverbs apart is its thematic integration. Rather than abstract grids, you're uncovering a masterwork of Renaissance art while learning about cultural wisdom. The game includes 94 Steam achievements tied to specific proverbs, soothing lo-fi and renaissance soundtracks, and Steam Deck verification for portable play. Completion typically requires 25-30+ hours of focused puzzle-solving.

Proverbs appeals to players seeking relaxing, long-form puzzle experiences without combat or time pressure. It's ideal for those who enjoy logic puzzles, art history, or meditative gameplay. The game respects player agency—there's no rush, no failure states, only the gradual satisfaction of revealing a masterpiece one tile at a time.
