Hunt through a corrupted city as Noah, a former priest turned demon-hunter, performing exorcisms and forging alliances in this unholy roguelite deckbuilder. The city teems with demons, and among them lies your prey: Malys, a demon of extraordinary cunning and power. As you pick your path through the city, you'll encounter its denizens—some friendly, some not so much, and some possessed by demons that you'll need to exorcise.

The core mechanic replaces traditional mana with "candlelight," a shared resource pool you generate by burning cards you might one day need. Early on, you may resist torching duplicate strike cards hoping for combos—until you run out of light in a boss fight and watch your options dwindle. That moment cements a core lesson: sacrifice becomes part of your deck's identity. To exorcise a demon, you must whittle down their health bar while putting up Wards to protect Noah's Will meter. Demons can also sap the health bar of the human they're possessing, requiring you to exorcise the demon before its host expires.

In Malys, death is not the end. Start the night over from the beginning, with only Noah and a select few aware of the horrors that have occurred. Noah must begin his hunt again. In each run, Noah picks an initial Artifact (which determines his starting deck and unique initial passive ability) and must advance through three regions by moving up via different nodes. These can include demon encounters, special unknown events which may have positive or negative outcomes, and NPCs in which you can exchange your Faith currency for new cards, healing and Curios to provide additional passive buffs.

Malys twists Slay the Spire's deckbuilding with a demonic exorcism mechanic, and a story and world from Dragon Age creator David Gaider. The art style—ink-heavy linework drenched in crimson—leans into gothic and neo-noir vibes. But visuals alone wouldn't cut it without Gaider's writing anchoring each place. In Lower Stacks, cryptic graffiti hints at local legends; in the Cathedral of Ash, hymns falter as dust chokes the pews. This environmental storytelling turns every room into a mini-stage, making the stale "go down a corridor, fight an encounter" loop feel alive. The game appeals to players seeking narrative depth in their roguelikes, combining strategic card sacrifice decisions with atmospheric horror storytelling.
