You play as a native of Teer Fradee, uprooted by force from your island and taken to the continent of Gacane, where the colonists are from. Travel across new landscapes, from Olima – the city of stars of the Bridge Alliance – to the shores of Uxantis, and uncover the secrets of these ancient lands. The game is divided into large open zones where you can explore and discover your surroundings, collect weapons, clothing, potions, money, and lots of resources, with a relatively high degree of freedom to tackle the game's tasks as you wish.

GreedFall: The Dying World has switched to a Real Time with Pause system akin to Dragon Age: Origins, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous or Pillars of Eternity. The combat system is designed to provide a greater strategic dimension, especially thanks to the option of controlling your companions, and a tactical pause system enabling you to keep perfect control of any situation. You must first create your character in a highly detailed character editor and then choose between 12 different character types/classes. The game lets you customize the combat to your liking and when you factor in the huge variety of weapons, builds, and party configurations, you're left with a lot to tinker with.

As an RPG, GreedFall: The Dying World grants you many dialogue options that can influence the plot in some ways. You get to meet new allies ready to join your cause: recruit up to eight companions, each with their own story, beliefs, and secrets. Their presence in your party allows you to obtain information, defuse tricky situations, or sometimes make them worse. The game hits all the notes of a strong RPG: great characters, quality writing, lots of dialogue options, deep gameplay systems, and a beautiful, fascinating world to explore.

Spiders released the game into early access in September 2024 and overhauled the combat. Rather than attempt to refine the action-RPG gameplay of its predecessor, Spiders turned GreedFall: The Dying World's combat into a real-time with pause tactical RPG. This represents a significant departure from the original game, appealing to players who favor strategic, party-based combat over fast-paced action. It's an old-school way of approaching combat in a role-playing game, but old-school RPG fans will probably welcome it, as it's not something we see very often anymore.
