Desktop Fishes transforms your desktop into a living aquarium where pixel-art fish swim freely over your work, games, and applications. Developed by solo indie creator Daniel Santalla, this idle simulator lets you build a thriving ecosystem without demanding active attention—your fish generate currency and grow at their own pace while you focus on other tasks.

The core gameplay loop centers on hatching eggs, breeding fish with distinct genetic traits, and collecting thousands of possible combinations. Each fish progresses through visible life stages, from egg to juvenile to adult, creating natural moments of discovery. You accumulate in-game currency passively, which you spend to acquire more fish, unlock new tank upgrades, and expand your collection. The system rewards patience and experimentation rather than reflexes or time pressure.

Desktop Fishes features a quirky skill tree that gates progression, offering playful upgrades that expand breeding mechanics, tank capacity, and customization options. You can dress fish in accessories, choose between overlay or wallpaper display modes, and select which monitor displays your aquarium on multi-screen setups. The game auto-saves progress and runs efficiently in the background, consuming minimal system resources.

This title targets players seeking a stress-free, low-commitment experience—office workers, students, and anyone who enjoys creature collection without competitive pressure. The pixel-art aesthetic and cozy atmosphere distinguish it from traditional management games, emphasizing visual charm and relaxation over complex systems. Desktop Fishes appeals to fans of idle games, virtual pets, and slow-paced simulators who want a companion application that enhances their desktop environment.
