Two years after Yumia uncovered the mysteries of the continent of Aladiss, a phenomenon known as mana withering begins to appear. Karia, an adventurer and member of the Aladiss Pioneering Team, stumbles upon an undiscovered world beneath Aladiss while investigating ruins, where she finds a large cauldron and encounters alchemy for the first time.

Players travel between the surface and underground to uncover the mysteries of the world. New features add to the strategy of battles and depth of alchemy, with synthesized items taking on new roles during exploration, and ingredients eaten to gain effects. The game features a unique system that blends traditional alchemy with culinary exploration, allowing players to snack on gathered ingredients to trigger immediate, dynamic effects, such as sprouting animal ears and gaining specialized traits when consuming animal-based components.

Karia possesses the mysterious ability to eat and analyze almost anything, though she has no memories of her past and does not know why she possesses this power. As Karia eats Echo Crystals found throughout the story, she unravels mysteries that surround the Subterranea and her own forgotten past. The game emphasizes exploration, character development, and uncovering interconnected mysteries across two distinct environments.

Atelier Karia is the 27th main entry in the Atelier series and the 2nd game in the Memories sub-series.
