Afterbeat, formerly known as Project Arrhythmia, is a musical bullet-hell in which all things beautiful are deadly. The game features a story mode set in the year 207X where you play as a nanobot. The game follows Anna Schroeder (a.k.a A-Tan) as she tries to find a cure for the LNNS, a disease that has ravaged the world, alongside the supercomputer Hal.

It features tight bullet-hell style gameplay where up to 4 players in local co-op must navigate their way through evolving scenes and obstacles, all timed to the beat. The player controls a small square nanobot that can move around with the arrow keys, WASD, or a joystick. Pressing the space key on keyboards causes them to phase, gaining a boost of speed and brief invincibility to pass through objects with. Level performance is mainly graded based on the number of hits taken, which affect one's rank. More hits results in a lower rank, while the best rank (P) requires no hits at all.

The main spin on the game's bullet-hell elements is that all obstacles appear or move to the music. The full version is planned to have a completed "Story Mode". It will contain 20+ levels and full visual novel style cutscenes with puzzles and other elements. It also has a level editor and numerous custom levels shared via the Steam Workshop. Many custom levels are part of collections with their own story or theme.

A wealth of user-created content exists, fully integrated into the game through the usage of the level editor and user-made levels. Already, 2000+ community levels have been uploaded, and more are being made daily.
