A Pet Shop After Dark is a horror point-and-click adventure where you take on a night shift at a peculiar pet shop. The premise appears straightforward: water the plants, feed the animals, and stay until morning. There's just one rule—do not turn off the lights. What begins as a simple caretaking job gradually reveals unsettling details about the shop's true nature and its invisible inhabitants.

Gameplay centers on exploration and interaction within the confined space of the pet shop. You navigate between rooms by clicking directional arrows, then interact with highlighted objects to complete your assigned tasks. The core loop involves clicking on plant pots to water them and clicking on animal cages to feed the pets, though the animals themselves remain mysteriously hidden from view throughout your shift.

What distinguishes A Pet Shop After Dark from conventional point-and-click adventures is its innovative use of meta-gameplay. Beyond clicking within the game window, solving certain puzzles requires you to directly manipulate game files in your computer's directory. This breaks the traditional boundary between game and system, turning file management into a puzzle-solving tool. For instance, deleting specific files can alter the game world in unexpected ways, forcing players to think beyond standard adventure game logic.

The game's horror elements build through atmosphere and psychological tension rather than jump scares or graphic content. Its charming, cartoonish art style contrasts sharply with the growing sense of dread as you uncover the shop's secrets. Multiple endings reward different approaches and discoveries, encouraging replay to fully understand the narrative.

A Pet Shop After Dark appeals to players who appreciate experimental indie games, compact horror experiences, and puzzle design that challenges conventional thinking. Its approximately two-hour runtime keeps the simple mechanics fresh while delivering a complete, thought-provoking story. This title is ideal for those seeking something unconventional that respects player intelligence and creativity.
